Reporting to the Deputy Fire Marshal, The Assistant Fire Marshal is responsible for the effective implementation of fire safety and fire prevention, including providing information, advice and guidance to owners, occupants, employers, employees, employees, contractors, architects, engineers and the public, as to the requirements of the Nunavut Fire Safety Act and Regulations (FSA). The incumbent may deliver or assist with the delivery of Nunavut Fire Marshal's Office (NFMO) activities including fire fighter training, inspections, fire investigations, code enforcement, public fire safety education, and provide technical information to the GN, private organizations, architects and engineers.

The Key responsibilities of this position include conducting fire safety inspections within GN, public and private premises to reduce loss of life, property and accidental injury through enforcement of necessary acts, codes and standards; conduct training programs and courses in firefighting (industrial, municipal, and public); conduct fire education programs, providing instructions to community groups, and general public children; conduct investigations to determine the cause of fire, related fatalities or injuries, and property damage as the result of fire; liaise with Nunavut Government officials, Community Councils, RCMP, Regional Health and Social Services Board to plan and promote public awareness of fire prevention procedures. Extensive travel to remote locations will be required.

Required
The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this job are usually obtained through graduation from a recognized fire training college; Several years related experience in the fire service; IFSAC and/or Pro-Board certifications or equivalent:

  • NFPA 1001 – Level 2, Fire Fighter Professional Qualification.
  • NFPA 1031 – Level 2, Fire Inspector.
  • NFPA 1033 – Fire Investigator.
  • NFPA 1041 – Level 1 Fire Service Instructor.

Class 3 Driver's License with Air Brake Certification; Acceptable combinations of education and experience may be considered for this position. We encourage you to apply if you have equivalent years of education and/or experience equal to the education and experience requirements listed above.

The Official Languages Of Nunavut Are Inuktut, English And French. Applicants May Submit Their Resume In Any Of The Official Languages Of Nunavut. Fluency In More Than One Of Nunavut's Official Languages Would Be Considered An Asset. Knowledge Of Inuit Communities, Culture, Land,Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut And Experience Working In a Northern Cross-cultural Environment Are Also Considered Assets. Working Towards, Or Successfully Achieved, The Following IFSAC And/or Pro-Board Certifications Or Equivalent Are Considered Assets Include

  • NFPA 1041 – Level 2 Fire Service Instructor.
  • NFPA 1035 – Level 1 Fire and Life Safety Educator.
  • NFPA 1021 – Level 1 Fire Officer.
  • Experience in fire investigations and conducting training programs.

This is a Highly Sensitive Position and a satisfactory Criminal Record Check, along with a clear Vulnerable Sector Check is required.
