Hula (Hawaiian/Tahitian) Dance Instructor -Seasonal-Contract

Fusion Cardio Toronto is looking for a caring, highly experienced, and safe dance instructor to teach a Hula Dance program for beginners in the Bloor West - High Park area.

This program is seasonal and contract in the Fall and Winter/Spring. The program may run on a Tuesdays/Wednesday or Friday evening (1-hour between 7 PM - 9 PM)

Instructor Responsibilities:

• To instruct a 50-minute fun, safe, and effective class for all levels and abilities with confidence in-person
• Understands the components of a dance class (warm-up, dance learning and practice time, a cool-down)
• Familiar with Hula dance movements & rhythms (Hawaiian, Tahitian, Samoan, etc)
• Can cue effectively using a range of indications (visual, hands, verbal)
• Ensures clients understand RPE (rate of perceived exertion) to reduce fatigue and injuries
• Shows up 10 minutes before class to set up and greet participants, and ends on time to pack up, arrange the room, and greet participants off before other classes
• start (time management and arriving early is necessary)
• Able to teach a class in the interest of the group participants (modifying movements for beginners and women with no dance or fitness experience)
• Willing to instruct a small class for older women (maximum 15)
• Shows compassion for those recovering from chronic health conditions
• Can bring their own portable speaker device and music device
• Able to lift up to 15 lb and arrange the room (stack tables/chairs and set aside for space)
• Teaches assigned classes on time and ends on time, unless a delay occurs
• Open to receiving regular feedback and discussing issues/concerns in-person & phone
• Able to communicate all issues and concerns well and in a timely manner by phone and text (including being late, class cancellations, and participants' issues, and
• injuries)
• Shows professionalism at all times (including conversations and workout attire) and upholds the organizer's code of ethics
• Agrees not to promote themselves, their classes/services, or other companies in class
• Able to instruct in a community setting (not a traditional gym/dance studio)

The Instructor Must Have

• A minimum of 5 years instructing Hula Dance
• Must have experience with various Hula dances forms and Polynesian culture
• Must have a valid CPR Level C and First Aid training
• Must have personal liability insurance
• A portable speaker that they can bring to our classes (or we can provide one to use)
• Must speak, read, and understand English well
• Should have online-zoom teaching experience (in case there are any future pandemic lockdowns, all instructors shift online)
• Asset: is a Fitness Instructor Specialist, Personal Trainer, Movement/Fitness Coach, Exercise Specialist, Health and Fitness Promoter, Kinesiologist OR equivalent through a Canadian or North American governing body

The Interview process has 3 steps:

1. To save time, Sumera will call applicants to discuss their qualifications and availability (from a private caller ID) before setting up a Zoom interview. The applicant may be required to attend at least 2 of their dance/fitness classes to see their programming.

2. A mock-up class on Zoom where the candidate leads Sumera or her recruiter through a Bollywood fitness class according to their structure (this will be provided to the chosen applicants)

3. If selected, can provide 2 relevant work references, a police check (vulnerable sector check), copies of their certifications, valid CPR certificate, government ID, and the signing of an instructor agreement outlining the terms and conditions.

Honorariums

This is not employment. This is a volunteer position with a monthly honorarium issued at the end of the month

$40 flat per class - certified dance certification or equivalent, valid CPR and first aid, and personal liability insurance.
