About the Role

Southland Trailers is hiring a Manufacturing Automation Engineer to design and develop custom automated equipment and machinery to support our production operations.

This role is hands-on and cross-functional. You will design custom machines from concept through commissioning, create detailed drawings for fabrication, and develop PLC ladder logic to control automated systems. You'll work closely with manufacturing, maintenance, and engineering teams to deliver safe, reliable, and production-ready automation solutions.

What You'll Do:

• Design and develop custom automated manufacturing equipment and machinery
• Create and maintain 3D models and assemblies using SolidWorks (preferred)
• Produce 2D drawings, including flat patterns for laser cutting, forming, and fabrication
• Develop, program, and debug ladder logic (PLC) for custom automation systems
• Integrate mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic systems into machine designs
• Support machine commissioning, troubleshooting, and continuous improvement efforts
• Work closely with manufacturing, maintenance, and engineering teams to optimize automation solutions
• Create and maintain technical documentation, including drawings, schematics, and control logic documentation
• Ensure designs comply with safety standards, manufacturing best practices, and company standards

What We're Looking For:

• Post-secondary education in Accounting, Business, or HR is preferred.
• Prior payroll and benefits administration experience in a medium to large organization.
• Strong knowledge of Alberta payroll legislation, EI, CPP, tax deductions, and related regulations.
• Experience with payroll systems (Dayforce or similar) and MS Office (especially Excel).
• Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
• Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple priorities under strict deadlines.
• Excellent communication skills with a professional and approachable demeanor.
• Proactive, problem-solving mindset and a commitment to confidentiality and integrity.
