Lead Technician - Facility and Building Operations
Position Summary
Are you a hands-on problem solver who prefers being on the tools rather than behind a desk? The YMCA of Saskatoon is seeking a Lead Technician to take a frontline role in maintaining, repairing, and supporting the operation of our facilities.
The successful candidate will spend most of their time performing building repairs, preventive maintenance, and troubleshooting mechanical and electrical systems. You will lead by example through your technical work, supporting a small facilities team and ensuring our buildings are safe, functional, and welcoming for our members and staff.
This role is based at the Downtown YMCA and supports other YMCA locations as required.
Key ResponsibilitiesHands-On Repairs & Maintenance
• Perform routine and corrective maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical systems
• Repair lighting, fixtures, doors, locks, and building hardware
• Complete minor carpentry, painting, drywall, and general repairs
• Perform maintenance and repairs on fitness and aquatic equipment
• Conduct preventative maintenance to reduce system downtime and breakdowns
• Respond to urgent and emergency maintenance issues as required
• Inspect and monitor HVAC, boilers, electrical systems, and mechanical equipment
• Maintain pool systems, including water chemistry and filtration
• Ensure building systems are operating safely, efficiently, and within regulatory requirements
• Monitor building performance and identify emerging maintenance issues
• Work side-by-side with a fellow technician on repairs and maintenance tasks
• Provide hands-on guidance and support for technical skill development
• Support operational readiness of the facility by resolving day-to-day maintenance issues
• Demonstrate safe work practices and proper tool and equipment use through example
• Perform routine fire system testing and life safety inspections
• Ensure compliance with WHMIS, OH&S, and YMCA safety standards
• Participate in emergency response efforts and safety drills
• Follow proper lockout/tagout and safety procedures for all maintenance work
• Complete maintenance and inspection logs
• Track repairs performed and parts used
• Identify and report supply, parts, and equipment needs
• Support work order tracking and contractor coordination (when required)
• Identify recurring maintenance issues and recommend practical solutions
• Support lifecycle planning for equipment and building systems
• Suggest efficiency improvements and preventative maintenance enhancements
• Proven experience in building or facility maintenance
• Fireman Boiler Operator Certification (or willingness to obtain)
• Swimming Pool Operator Certification (preferred)
• Valid driver's license (preferred)
• Standard First Aid & CPR (or willingness to obtain)
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work safely at heights
• Strong troubleshooting skills across mechanical, electrical, and building systems
• Comfortable working independently and in a hands-on environment
