Duties

As an Ecologist Team Leader, you will:

• Lead a field-based marine science and conservation program focused on ecosystem monitoring, active management, restoration, and species at risk recovery.
• Provide science-based advice to support decision making
• Supervise and lead a small field team

Work environment

Parks Canada is a federal government agency responsible for the protection and presentation of Canada's outstanding natural and cultural resources through a system of national parks, national marine conservation areas and national historic sites in all regions of Canada.

Gwaii Haanas is a place of thriving Haida culture evident throughout the middens, village sites and welcoming smiles of the Haida Gwaii Watchmen. Located on the southern third of Haida Gwaii and accessible only by boat or air, Gwaii Haanas is a place of ancient forests and intact ecosystems, protected from the mountaintops to the ocean floor.

The Gwaii Haanas team continues to build on 30 years of cooperative management, founded on an equal partnership between the governments of Canada and the Haida Nation. The team is guided by the Archipelago Management Board (AMB), with members representing the Haida Nation, Parks Canada and Fisheries and Oceans Canada. The cooperative governance framework is based on Haida principles and emulated worldwide.

The Gwaii Haanas team office is in Skidegate, on the remote and stunning archipelago of Haida Gwaii, about 600 kilometers north of Vancouver Island and a roughly eight-hour ferry ride (depending on the wind and seas) from Prince Rupert. Short-haul flights run from Vancouver International Airport to both Sandspit and Masset.

We're a team of about 40 people year-round, and about 60 in the operating season. Marine and terrestrial conservation and protection work, as well as operations and maintenance support work, is typically done in multi-day field shifts, primarily in the spring and summer.

EDUCATION

Graduation from a recognized university with a degree in resource management, conservation biology or other environmental science with a marine focus relevant to the position (e.g. a specialized degree with a marine focus such as marine biology, a degree where a significant portion of course work is marine related, and/or a significant project or thesis with a marine focus) (Proof of education must be submitted with your application).

EXPERIENCE

• Experience designing, collecting, analyzing, synthesizing and reporting on scientific information for one or more of the following: ecosystem monitoring, active management, restoration, species at risk recovery, and/or initiatives related to the marine environment.
• Experience preparing technical/scientific reports, manuscripts, monitoring protocols, and/or scientific presentations.
• Experience coordinating, planning and implementing projects with internal and external interest groups and partners.
• Experience providing science-based advice to support decision-making.
• Experience supervising staff, volunteers or students, and/or leading teams.

• Experience coaching and/or mentoring to support staff or team development.
• Experience collaborating with Indigenous governments, organizations and/or communities on resource-related issues.
• Experience managing financial resources
• Experience operating motorized watercraft including navigation, assessing weather, maneuvering in confined spaces, and trouble-shooting basic issues with vessels.

• Knowledge of temperate marine social-ecological systems and relationships between people and place.
• Knowledge of marine ecosystem-based monitoring and management, management challenges, and partnership opportunities related to marine science and management.
• Knowledge of experimental design and statistical analyses.

• Ability to effectively and safely lead a field team in remote and sometimes challenging conditions.
• Ability to manage projects, including planning, logistics, implementation, finance, and reporting.
• Ability to analyze and synthesize knowledge from diverse sources such as scientific, local and Indigenous knowledge systems.
• Ability to work collaboratively on a cross-cultural team, and with management partners, rightsholders, and interest groups (e.g., colleagues, fishing industry, conservation organizations, networks, and external partners).
• Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with diverse audiences (e.g. public, media, technical and managerial).

• Willingness to wear a Gwaii Haanas uniform and personal protective equipment when required.
• Willingness to work and travel in varied terrain, weather conditions, isolated locations and by various means of transportation, including overnight field shifts of up to eight days.
• Willingness to work irregular hours, including overtime, evenings, weekends, statutory holidays and provincial/territorial holidays when required.
• Willingness to obtain certification and operate vehicles and machinery related to this position (e.g., motorized watercraft).
