Our Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) Department is currently seeking an energetic and dynamic individual with proven capability in HSE for their Calgary, Alberta plant.

This position will provide support to the EHS Manager in developing and maintaining the safety management system. This includes, but is not limited to EHS documentation, incident/accident investigations, audits and training while playing an active role in continuous improvement activities.

Role Responsibilities

  • Proactive approach to workplace and employee safety programs, including planning documenting, implementing, and maintaining.
  • Positive / self-motivated and fully engaged as a key member of a multi-disciplinary team; takes hands-on accountability for their work and the success of the plant.
  • Continual improvement of management systems including procedure development and maintenance, compliance, training and internal auditing as it applies to ISO and COR
  • Ensuring all safety incidents and significant near misses are reported.
  • Through the facility Lean Manufacturing processes participate in incident reporting, root cause analysis, corrective action follow-up and continual process improvement.
  • Record and track KPI objectives as they apply to EH&S.
  • Work collaboratively with operations management and staff to build a strong safety culture.
  • Assist with management and orientation of third-party contractors utilizing Complyworks contractor management program. Conduct onsite reviews with contract service providers.
  • Orientation and training for all levels of the organization for safety related programs.
  • Coordinate and track the disposal of all wastes including any Hazardous waste and plant site recycling. Access and implement waste reduction initiatives.
  • Assist with annual environmental reporting as required by the AEP approval. NPRI reporting.
  • Provide back-up for EH&S Manager as required.
  • Assist the EH&S manager with annual goals and objectives.
  • Assist the logistics department with transportation of dangerous goods documentation and placarding through training and periodic inspections and reviews.
  • Emergency Response training, drills and support during plant site emergencies. On call work may be required.
  • Participation and periodic leadership in the plant JWHSC (Joint Worksite Health and Safety Committee)
  • Observe and coach employee and supervisory safety behavior.
  • Review completed safety documentation such as safe work permits and confined space permits for compliance to internal procedures and legislation.
  • Support and train plant supervisory personnel in proactive safety programs such as effective safety meetings, and formal & informal department inspections.
  • Ensure compliance with Calgary bylaws, AB provincial regulations, federal regulations and internal company policies.
  • Assist with the facilitation and management of WCB claims and return to work programs in conjunction with HR and supervisory team.
  • Assist with safety equipment purchasing and inspection.
  • Maintain personal safety and auditing training courses as required

Compliance with standard operating procedures, legal and other requirements including health and safety, fire protection, environmental, quality, security and continuous improvement programs is a requirement of the job.

Qualifications

  • Minimum 3 - 5 years of health and safety experience preferably in a manufacturing or production unionized environment
  • Post-secondary education in Occupational Health and Safety, Environmental Management, or related field.
  • Knowledge of OHS, Alberta Environment, COR and ISO/OHSAS program requirements
  • CSRP preferred or in process of obtaining
  • Lean manufacturing or 5S experience is an asset
  • Strong decision-making and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to motivate and promote HSE awareness to employees and management
  • Excellent communication skills, both oral and written
  • Must have physical mobility to access all areas of the Plant
  • Exceptional working knowledge of Microsoft Office is required
  • Other preferred training includes: CRSP, COR/ISO, Fall protection, confined space entry and rescue, standard first aid, respiratory protection, WCB/disability management training
