Located in downtown Toronto, the largest and most culturally diverse city in Canada and on the territory of the Anishinaabeg, Haudenosaunee and the Wendat Peoples, the Faculty of Arts at Toronto Metropolitan University [] (formerly Ryerson University) invites applications for the position of Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and International Engagement. The successful candidate will be appointed for a five-year term commencing January 1, 2026, with the possibility of renewal of up to one additional five-year term.

During the term of appointment as Associate Dean, the incumbent shall be an "associate member" of the Toronto Metropolitan Faculty Association (TFA) in accordance with the TFA Collective Agreement. The processes related to the recruitment and selection of the successful candidate for the Associate Dean position are governed by the Appointment of Academic Administrators Policy and Procedures (the "AAA Policy"). Consistent with other senior university appointments, the successful candidate will receive an administrative stipend for the period of appointment as Associate Dean.

The Associate Dean, Graduate Studies and International Engagement provides academic leadership for the strategic development, quality assurance, and operational management of graduate programs in the Faculty of Arts, while advancing the Faculty's international partnerships and global engagement strategy. Working in alignment with the Toronto Metropolitan University Academic Plan , the Internationalization Plan (2025–30), Transnational Education and the Faculty of Arts Action Plan (2025–30), the Associate Dean champions initiatives that enhance graduate education, strengthen the Faculty's global presence, and ensure operational excellence.

Key responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  • Graduate Program Leadership – Provide academic and strategic leadership for graduate programs in collaboration with Graduate Program Directors (GPDs) and the Yeates School of Graduate and Postdoctoral Studies (YSGPS); lead program development, review, and renewal; ensure alignment with Faculty and university goals; foster interdisciplinary and cross-Faculty initiatives, including the development of experiential opportunities, co-op education and internships.
  • Graduate and Postdoctoral Student Experience – Strengthen student success through holistic advising, mentorship, and professional development. Advance equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) initiatives, and expand funding.
  • Graduate Recruitment, Marketing, and Enrolment Management – Develop and implement a Faculty of Arts Graduate Studies Strategic Enrollment Plan that provides a long-term roadmap for sustainable and strategic growth in graduate programs, ensuring that enrollment aligns with institutional priorities, program capacity, and emerging research and societal needs.
  • International Engagement & Partnerships – Lead international strategies with TMU Global; build partnerships; oversee recruitment, admissions, orientation, and support for international students; coordinate with Toronto Metropolitan University International College and other partners.
  • Budget & Resource Planning – Participate in budget setting; advocate for resources; monitor financial allocations within the graduate and international portfolio.
  • HR & Administrative Leadership – Supervise staff; provide onboarding, training, and performance oversight; represent the Dean as required.

The successful candidate will be a tenured faculty member who holds a terminal degree in the humanities or social sciences and demonstrates excellence in teaching, SRC and service activities. They will further present evidence of:

  • Visionary, empathetic, and collaborative leadership with strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience managing complex academic portfolios, including graduate studies, curriculum development, and enrolment planning.
  • Proven ability in budgeting, financial management, and resource allocation.
  • Commitment to graduate and international student success through advising, mentorship, and experiential learning opportunities such as co-ops and internships.
  • Strong knowledge of the graduate landscape and international partnership at TMU, including YSGPS, TMU Global, relevant Senate policies, and Periodic Program Review processes.
  • Experience working or conducting research internationally, with established global connections and partnerships.
  • Deep commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility (EDIA) and to excellence in teaching, learning, and academic integrity.
