Reporting to the Vice-President, Academic & Provost, the Dean is responsible for the leadership of the Faculty’s educational and research development, facilitating community and institutional partnerships, enhancing the student experience, and aligning the goals of the Faculty of Design with the University’s Academic and Strategic Plan. Working collaboratively and in close consultation with the Deans of the Faculty of Art, the Faculty of Arts & Science and the Dean of the School of Graduate Studies, the Dean promotes effective management of the University’s academic programs, research, outreach, supports its educational goals, and enriches University life.
**Summary of Responsibilities**:
- VISIONARY _
- Provide leadership in the ongoing development and implementation of the strategic vision of the Faculty of Design in accordance with the University’s Academic and Strategic Plan, including OCAD U’s strategic equity priorities to diversify student enrollment, faculty, and staff; to optimize existing programs for inclusion, to further new curricular directions, and to ensure that students are informed by a wide spectrum of knowledge and experience embodied in an inclusive variety of communities, philosophies and ways of knowing
- In consultation with Design faculty, Associate Deans, other Deans, and the Vice-President Academic & Provost, provide curricular leadership in the Faculty of Design, with a particular focus on decolonizing and Indigenizing design education, innovative and accessible delivery models, equity, inclusive design, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, student mobility, and experiential learning
- Promote excellence in research and professional practice among faculty; support the University’s goals for increasing research, innovation, and professional practice capacity
- Promote excellence in teaching within the Faculty
- Maintain an active role in creative communities (such as participation in professional, academic and scholarly associations), and effectively represent both the Faculty and the University
- STRATEGIC_
- Encourage and contribute to the growth of graduate programs at the University
- Develop and implement strategic priorities and initiatives to advance decolonization, equity and sustainability, and promote positive transformation and change within the Faculty of Design
- Maximize the effectiveness of administrative structures to promote an environment that supports equity, diversity, and inclusion within the Faculty of Design
- Build effective community and faculty engagement in the Faculty of Design
- Develop strong partnerships with industry, Not-for-Profit organizations and community-based organizations
- Collaborate with the Advancement and the Government Relations & Public Policy offices in the creation and implementation of development strategies, partnerships and activities that strengthen curriculum, research, and student experience in the Faculty of Design and OCAD U
- Support the Vice-President, Academic & Provost with related duties contributing to the achievement of the University’s strategic objectives
- OPERATIONAL_
- In consultation with the other Deans, recommend to the Vice-President, Academic & Provost the faculty complement and staffing needs
- Direct day-to-day operations of all aspects of the Faculty of Design including curriculum, teaching and learning resources, while exercising prudent financial responsibility
- Supervise and meet with the Associate Dean, Chairs, faculty and support staff, and chair Faculty meetings to ensure effective communication and a respectful work and learning environment
- Oversee faculty evaluations and conduct faculty peer evaluation process for tenure and promotion of rank
- Oversee the communication and implementation of University policies as they pertain to faculty, staff and students
- Work collaboratively with other Deans and managers to ensure effective planning and resource management of the University, and to promote effective University-wide communication
- Plan, prepare and manage the Faculty of Design annual budget in consultation with the Vice-President, Academic & Provost
- Work closely with Chairs of Programs in Design, fellow Deans, Vice-Provost, Students & International, and the Vice-President, Academic & Provost to ensure established enrolment targets are met
- Assist the University in the implementation of the University/Faculty Association Memorandum of Agreement and participate in collective bargaining processes as required
- Prepare reports for the President, Vice-President, Academic & Provost, Senate and its Committees, and the Board of Governors, as required
