Senior Cable Technician (Calgary, AB)

About the role

We're hiring a Senior Cable Technician to lead field installs, upgrades, and service for fibre/coax networks in Calgary and surrounding communities. You'll own complex jobs end-to-end—coaching juniors, interfacing with customers, and ensuring every drop meets spec, every time.

What you'll do

  • Lead residential and commercial installs, cutovers, and service calls for fibre (GPON/Active) and HFC/coax systems.
  • Perform fusion splicing, terminations, and enclosure builds; dress/rack in pedestals, vaults, and telecom rooms; validate with OTDR/OLTS/power meter.
  • Install, label, and test premise cabling (Cat5e/6/6A), splitters, taps, ONTs, modems, gateways, and Wi-Fi gear; document light levels and signal margins.
  • Troubleshoot last-mile issues (PON levels, DOCSIS signal, SNR, ingress, noise) and remediate plant/home wiring faults.
  • Read and interpret network design prints, maps, and work orders; close jobs with photos and accurate as-builts.
  • Work safely at heights and in confined spaces (ladders, poles, attics, crawlspaces, vaults), in all Calgary weather.
  • Mentor apprentices/techs-in-training; model best practices and quality standards.

What you'll bring

  • 4–6+ years in cable/telecom field work with advanced splicing, testing, and HFC/PON troubleshooting.
  • Proficiency with OTDR, OLTS, power meters, TDRs, and signal analyzers; solid understanding of PON optics and DOCSIS fundamentals.
  • Strong customer communication; able to set expectations, educate users, and de-escalate.
  • Comfortable lifting 60+ lbs and handling 28–32 ft ladders; ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Clean Class 5 driver's licence and acceptable driver's abstract; able to pass background screening.

Nice to have (assets)

  • Manufacturer/training tickets (e.g., fibre enclosure/splice certifications), Fall Protection, Ladder Safety, First Aid, WHMIS.
  • Inside-plant build experience (racks, patch panels, cable management) and light civil (pedestals, pulls).
  • Experience with Rogers/Shaw/Xplore, Telco/MSO standards, and mobile work apps for job close-outs.

Working conditions

  • Field-based in Calgary; travel within the city and nearby areas as required.
  • Rotating schedules (some evenings/weekends/on-call) to support customer appointments and outage response.
  • PPE provided; specialty test gear supplied. Vehicle use may be required depending on assignment.
