These positions have an annual salary range of $75,000 and offer a comprehensive benefits package.

Location - This role is hybrid with a mix of remote and in-person work at North Campus Edmonton.

Two post-doctoral scholar opportunities are available. Applicants are requested to indicate in their cover letter which of the two positions they wish to apply for.

Implementation Scientist: Distinguished Postdoctoral Scholar

Applications are invited for this position to use implementation science frameworks to enable advances in virtual health and artificial intelligence systems to have clinical and social impact at the interface between acute and primary care in rural Alberta. The successful applicant will work closely with members of the University of Alberta Health Everywhere team and the newly established AI+Health Hub to guide the adoption of novel point-of-care systems and technologies to increase access to healthcare for Albertans living in rural and remote communities. This postdoctoral scholar will be strongly supported by Primary Care Alberta and will have the opportunity to work collaboratively with an established network of rural primary care practices and clinics throughout Alberta.

Machine Learning and Reinforcement Learning Scientist: Distinguished Postdoctoral Scholar

Applications are invited for a post-doctoral scholarship with a focus on advancing health applications of AI with a high potential for commercialization. The successful applicant will work closely with AltaML Inc. located in the downtown core in Edmonton. They will also be affiliated with the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII) where the fellow will have opportunities for mentorship from AMIIs extensive community of worldclass AI leaders. This fellowship has a strong focus on building solutions for challenging healthcare problems while creating economic opportunities that have social and clinical impact.

The Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine is Canada's only free-standing faculty dedicated to rehabilitation. It offers accredited professional programs in Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, and Speech-Language Pathology, along with a substantial research and continuing education portfolio. With campuses in Edmonton, Calgary, and Camrose, the faculty serves approximately 1,000 graduate students and is a national leader in advancing rehabilitation practice and outcomes.

Implementation Scientist: Distinguished Postdoctoral Scholar

  • Consult with members of the Health Everywhere Team to identify at least 2 significant projects to collaborate with that involve complex implementation challenges, particularly where they involve integration with primary, community and rural care settings.
  • Select from at least one of these projects an opportunity to seek funding to support expansion of the project, focussing on the implementation of the project in rural and primary care settings. This postdoctoral scholar is expected to collaborate with the Machine Learning and Reinforcement Learning Post-Doctoral Scholar.
  • Integrate these Health Everywhere sponsored activities with the newly formed AI+Health Hub at University of Alberta and participate in the strategic planning processes of both teams.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Hybrid working will require an agreed schedule.

Machine Learning and Reinforcement Learning Scientist: Distinguished Postdoctoral Scholar

  • Consult with members of the Health Everywhere Team to identify at least 2 significant projects being undertaken by the team that require enhance machine learning skills. Available projects include development of clinician decision support tools, AI-powered scribes and the development of enhanced care pathways.
  • An important goal for this position is to raise the technology readiness level (TRL) of several existing projects, working in collaboration with AltaML Inc., and in partnership with the proposed Implementation Scientist: Distinguished Post-Doctoral Scholar.
  • Select from at least one of these projects an opportunity to seek funding to support the expansion of the project, focussing on cutting edge applications of machine learning.
  • Integrate these Health Everywhere activities with the newly formed AI+Health Hub at University of Alberta and participate in the strategic planning processes of both teams.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Off-campus working with the AltaML team is expected.
  • Hybrid working will require an agreed schedule.

For the Implementation Scientist: Distinguished Postdoctoral Scholar:

  • PhD in health services research, implementation science, organizational development, or a related field.
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills with the ability to collaborate with a wide range of disciplines, especially in the clinical context.
  • The successful applicant must demonstrate experience in implementation science, including the use of implementation science frameworks.
  • Ability to effectively engage in knowledge mobilization with policy makers, healthcare decision-makers and the public.
  • Demonstrate strong communication skills in a wide range of contexts, including academic presentations and publications.
  • The PhD degree must have been obtained within 5 years of hiring.

For the Machine Learning and Reinforcement Learning Scientist: Distinguished Postdoctoral Scholar:

  • Candidates must have a PhD in computing science, specializing in machine learning
  • Specialization in applications that apply machine learning methods in healthcare.
  • A good track record of publishing in top conferences and journals
  • Candidates must have strong mathematical skills, good programming skills, and knowledge and experience in the domain of machine learning and deep learning (e.g. Python, Tensorflow/Pytorch, C/C++, OpenCV).
