Additional opportunities may exist for program leaders to provide 1:1 care for children with exceptional needs and also for casual program leaders who can pick up shifts at a variety of schools as available (covering holidays or sick leave).
Program Leaders are assigned to work in schools throughout Saskatoon and surrounding areas (Dalmeny, Langham, Warman and Whitecap Dakota Nation) providing safe, supportive and positive programming for school aged children during the before and after school time periods.
The position is flexible and can be the ideal job for post-secondary students, stay at home parents or those individuals looking to get more work experience as a new Canadian or youth. Applicants must be a minimum age of sixteen and eligible to work in Canada to apply. Program Leaders may also be permitted to bring their own non school age children to program with them at management's discretion. Additional opportunities are also available within the organization for program leaders to work full or part time summer hours in our summer camp programs and early learning centres. Applicants will be contacted by the management team to arrange an interview date. Successful applicants must be available for a mandatory training session before they work in a program. This training will provide program leaders with information regarding safety information, program policies & organizational procedures.
About BGC Saskatoon BGC Saskatoon is a non-profit organization dedicated to serving children and youth with quality programming in Saskatoon and surrounding areas since We believe that "Opportunity Changes Everything" and that all children should have the opportunity to participate in quality programs right in their own community. BGC Saskatoon employs a group of dedicated staff and volunteers to work with children, youth, and families, delivering programs in the following service areas: · Early Learning Centres · Before and After School Programs · Neighborhood Clubs · Summer Camps · Youth Employment Program · Parenting Program · Rosewater Mental Health Initiative Shift Overview - Program Leader Program leaders may work morning and/or afternoon shifts on days their assigned school is operating (no shifts on professional development days or school breaks/holidays). Morning shifts generally run from approximately 7:15 am to the first bell and the afternoon shifts generally run from 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm. Shifts may have differing start times depending on the school a program leader is assigned to. Shifts are paid for a minimum of 3 hours call out each. Program leaders advise their availability for shifts at their initial interview, we ask for a minimum commitment of 15 hours weekly (5 shifts) unless you are looking only for casual work. Wage $15.00-$16.00 per hour What does a program leader do? Every day can look a little different in the Before and After School Program; as such, program leaders need to be flexible and responsive to the needs of the children and youth attending. Program leaders are expected to be punctual as well as have a reliable method of transportation (city transit/vehicle) to ensure that programs open on time.
Most of all, program leaders have an incredible opportunity to engage with a diverse group of local children and youth and form meaningful relationships as a trusted adult in a child's life. Program Leaders will provide respectful, inclusive and quality programs by committing to:
- Planning daily activities that provide opportunities for children to develop and enhance skills, based on their interests and the principles of healthy childhood development
- Treat children and youth with respect, acceptance and honesty
- Actively supervise groups of children (ratio of 1 program leader to 15 children) and ensure children feel physically and emotionally safe & secure
- Use positive guidance and behavior management practices
- Interact with participants in a patient, interested, understanding and caring manner
- Daily communication with parents/guardians
- Work, communicate and collaborate as part of a team (other program leaders, managers, supervisors, and school administration)
- maintain and submit monthly attendance records and month end documentation.
The Before & After School program leaders are supported by a team of program managers and supervisors who will assist program leaders by:
- Purchasing monthly program supplies
- Arranging schedules/time off
- Completing program evaluations
- Supporting leaders in problem solving and by providing resources
- Communication with parents and school administration as needed
- Processing/approving payroll timesheets (biweekly)
- Canadian Language Benchmark Level 6 or higher (preferred)
- CPR/First Aid Certification (required - within first two months of employment)
- Previous work or volunteer experience in childcare/education/coaching or related field an asset
- *additional mandatory training provided by employer upon hiring.
