Cloud & Web Optimization Engineer
Halifax, NS Canada
We have partnered with a dynamic Information Technology services company that partners with leading global organizations to deliver innovative, high-quality IT solutions who are seeking an experienced
Cloud & Web Optimization Engineer
to join their growing team.
We are looking for a skilled Cloud & Web Optimization Engineer to drive the Web Performance and CDN Management capabilities for a portfolio of clients operating in highly demanding, large-scale online environments.
This role will be instrumental in managing and optimizing Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), analyzing web performance end-to-end, and operationally maintaining domain availability and routing configurations to ensure best-in-class user experience and service uptime.
You will work closely with cross-functional teams — software engineers, systems administrators, and business stakeholders — to identify bottlenecks, optimize performance across the full stack, and enhance the reliability of web applications and infrastructure. A strong background in Cloudflare CDN configuration, management, and workers is essential.
What you'll do:
CDN Management & Optimization
- Manage, configure, and optimize global Content Delivery Networks (CDNs), with a strong focus on Cloudflare including setup, rule configuration, caching strategies, Workers, etc.
- Monitor and optimize Cloudflare Workers and edge functions for performance, scalability, and security.
- Support operational activities involving domain routing, DNS changes, SSL/TLS configurations, and availability monitoring.
- Lead continuous improvement efforts for CDN performance.
Web Performance Management
- Conduct performance analysis from the browser to the application layer, identifying areas for optimization in the CDN, and application stack.
- Build and maintain an end-to-end performance monitoring and alerting ecosystem, integrating RUM, synthetic monitoring, and domain availability tools.
- Investigate and resolve performance deviations, collaborating with technical teams to implement corrective actions and improvements.
- Define and maintain core web vitals thresholds and operational response plans for performance incidents.
- Advice in web performance best practices to improve web performance.
Reporting & Stakeholder Engagement & Applications
- Provide regular reports on performance metrics, CDN health, and optimization progress.
- Communicate technical performance insights and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
- Support application and infrastructure teams by providing actionable feedback on architecture, caching, and delivery improvements.
- Provide support and guidance in alternative approaches to router web traffic.
What you'll bring:
- Proven experience managing and optimizing CDN platforms, especially Cloudflare (Workers, Page Rules, Cache Rules, DNS, etc.).
- Experience supporting applications that monitor and operationally manage domain availability and routing.
- Strong understanding of DNS, HTTP, HTTP/2, HTTP/3, QUIC, and SSL/TLS protocols.
- Demonstrated ability to optimize web stack components such as Nginx, Apache, caching layers (e.g., Varnish), Brotli/Gzip compression, and edge configurations.
- Experience in web performance monitoring and analysis tools such as WebPageTest, RUM, Synthetic Monitoring, and Flamegraphs.
- Familiarity with Cloud monitoring and logging (e.g., Prometheus, Grafana, Jaeger, OpenTelemetry).
- Experience working with load balancers (on-prem and cloud-based) and optimizing global web delivery for high-traffic transactional sites.
- Proficiency with version control (GIT) and infrastructure automation for performance configurations.
- Knowledge of web optimization best practices for images, JavaScript, and front-end performance.
- Understanding of networking fundamentals, application delivery, and web security principles.
- Exposure to CMS platforms (e.g., WordPress) and search/SEO performance metrics.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, able to work well under pressure and manage multiple priorities.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and collaboration skills.
- Fluent in English.
- Desirable: Experience with Bash, Linux, containers, Kubernetes, and Public Cloud Providers (AWS, GCP, Azure).
Preferred Experience
- Direct operational management of Cloudflare CDN configurations across multiple domains or client environments.
- Hands-on experience creating and deploying Cloudflare Workers or equivalent edge logic.
- Proven track record of improving Core Web Vitals and reducing Time to First Byte (TTFB) or Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) across distributed systems.
- Experience integrating automated domain health monitoring with operational routing or DNS failover mechanisms.
