Lifeguard - Summer Paddling Program

SUMMARY
The Lifeguard is a full-time summer position (July – August; 8-9 weeks). The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe implementation of the Cheema summer swimming program. Reporting to the Summer Supervisor - the Lifeguard will supervise and arrange schedules for the swim program and ensure safe use of the waterfront area. Overseeing basic first aid requirements, the Lifeguard will be responsible for guarding Cheema's waterfront during recreational swimming sessions with the support of age-group coaches. Swimmer - 1-6 lessons will be delivered to select groups by the Lifeguard and their assistant Lifeguard. Communication is an integral part of your responsibility, as you will be involved in communicating with swimmers, paddlers, parents, and paddling coaches.
RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):
- Ensure the safety of swimmers during scheduled swim sessions, including ensuring that swimmers stay in the designated swimming areas.
- Execute swim competency evaluation for all paddlers.
- Oversee the organization and implementation of the swim safety evaluation program, including the following:
- Organize the swim program assessment day at the beginning of summer program.
- Organize the setup of buoys and other swim program equipment.
- Set up schedules for lunch time swims and assign additional guards.
- Provide swimming lessons: Lifesaving Society Swimmer 1-6.
- Maintain swim test records and program participant injury reports.
- Coordinate with the Summer Supervisor to optimize schedules between swimming and paddling.
- Coordinate swim times with coaches for U6 and U8 participants.
- Be a safety leader for children and positively represent Cheema Aquatic Club.
- Ensure compliance with the Summer Program Expectations (to be provided on Orientation Day)
- Write Incident Reports identifying causes or the potential to cause harm in the future and provide to the Summer Supervisor
- Inform Summer Supervisor of any safety concerns or issues that may arise.
- Cooperate with coaches and staff, working in a team environment.
- Assist with lunchtime supervision in designated supervision area.
- Participate in meetings, including any program planning meetings, weekly staff meetings during the summer, and orientation/training session(s) before the summer begins.
- Other duties as may be required from time to time.
REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
- National Lifeguard Society Lifeguard Certification (Waterfront)
- Water Safety Instructor Certificate (WSI) or Swim for Life Instructor Certificate (SFLI)
- Boat Driver's License
- Criminal background and vulnerable sector check are required prior to offer of employment
- First Aid & CPR
SKILLS REQUIRED
- Previous experience with Lifeguarding
- Ability to adapt to changing situations: weather; crowd dynamics; etc.
- Possess strong organizational, time management, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- Supervisory experience is an asset
- Competencies associated with working in an environment with children aged 7-15.
- Personality traits such as communicative, sociable, confident working with groups, and taking initiative are strong assets
- Ability to execute a dynamic plan in a fast-paced environment with multiple distractions.
- Attention to expected swim program deliverables.
- Willing to take direction, learn and become a higher-level leader.
OTHER
- Vacation: As a general rule, vacation time is not provided because it is a short work season, and all staff are needed in order for programs to run efficiently. Vacation time will only be approved in extenuating circumstances, and all requests must be submitted to supervisors at least two weeks prior to the requested time off. No vacation requests will be approved for the first two weeks of summer programming as that is our busiest time.
