Job Title: Learn To Train Coach

The Cheema Aquatic Club is a globally recognized canoe and kayak club providing opportunities for youth to achieve success in life and at all levels as an athlete. Cheema was founded in 1969 in Waverley to provide aquatic sports opportunities to the youth in our community. Cheema has a long history of Community, National, International and Olympic success.

JOB TYPE: Part time, hourly

SUMMARY

This position provides hourly coaching services to specific age groups and program categories. In all instances, this position is critical to the long-term development of our paddlers and their long-term participation in the sport. Ensuring enjoyment of the paddling, acquiring core skills and developing fitness through canoe-kayak is the means to all other program achievements.

Specific assignments could include Assisting FUNdamentals (U10); Leading Learn to Train (U12), Dragon Boat coaching hours available. Other coaching duties may be offered on an hourly basis (Dragonboat, PaddleAll, Masters, etc.). The Learn to Train lead role is the primary responsibility.

The role is usually comprised of a 10-month, 5 sessions per week hourly coaching role with Learn to Train and full-time work leading U12 paddlers in the summer months.

Key success metric: Your paddlers can’t wait to come back next season.

RESPONSIBILITIES (including, but not limited to):

- Design and deliver Long-Term Athlete Development (LTAD) appropriate programming for respective group(s), with the help of peer coaches, as needed.
- Provide a safe, respectful and fun atmosphere for all athletes.
- Teach participants to know all aspects of equipment, the proper care and use.
- Track attendance and fitness data on a daily basis.
- Be a role-model for young athletes and positively represent the Cheema Aquatic Club.
- Cooperate with other coaches and staff, working in a team environment.
- Identify, report, and help with general facility and equipment maintenance.
- Generate timely, weekly communication to parents regarding how the program has been running, educate families about the requirements of the sport and ensure relevant information for up-coming practices, events and regattas is provided.
- Perform other duties as needed.
- Ensure compliance with the Program Coaching Expectations and all policies designed to provide a safe and positive experience.

REQUIRED CERTIFICATIONS
- Certified ELCC or Canoe Kids (at prospective employee’s cost)
- Motor boat Driver’s License (at prospective employee’s cost)
- Criminal background and vulnerable sector check are required prior to offer of employment (at prospective employee’s cost)
- First Aid (at prospective employee’s cost)

IDEAL SKILLS, EXPERIENCES AND COMPETENCIES
- Experience working with children in a sport or recreation environment.
- Track record of working with development athletes.
- Experience with the sport of Canoe / Kayak.
- Competencies associated with working in an environment with children aged 7-15.
- Personality traits such as communicative, sociable, confident working with groups, and taking initiative are strong assets
- Ability to help deliver a dynamic plan in a fast-paced environment with multiple distractions.
- Attention to expected program deliverables.
- Developing organizational and communication skills.
- Willing to take direction, learn and become a higher-level leader.

OTHER
- Vacation: The role is hourly and as such, no vacation is provided. Vacation time will only be approved in extenuating circumstances, and all requests must be submitted to a supervisor at least two weeks prior to the requested time off.

PAY RATE: $17.50 - $19.50 per hour
