Overview and Purpose of the Role
Reporting to the Director, Professional Practice, Education & Academic, the Clinical Nurse Educator is responsible for providing leadership, education, and clinical expertise in the support, orientation and competency-based skills development of hospital staff.
The incumbent will work collaboratively with the interprofessional program team in implementing evidence-based practices to achieve program objectives in the development of clinical pathways and/or protocols. In addition, the Clinical Nurse Educator models clinical excellence and all core competencies.
They will work to advance professional nursing practice and the practice of other professions as appropriate through leadership, learning and development, integration of research, education and best practice, critical thinking inquiry and analysis.
Key Duties & Responsibilities:
- Develop, provide and evaluate education programs that support the development of the staff within the program
- Plan, coordinate and implement quality improvement initiatives to integrate person centered care, advance best practice and support the professional development of staff.
- Promote teamwork, quality management, competency in clinical skills and patient-focused care. Participates in the implementation/evaluation program/quality and safety of corporate education initiatives. Plans and facilitates orientation of new staff to the various areas within Surgical Day Care & PACU area.
- Identify and lead opportunities to conduct and integrate interprofessional research projects
- Demonstrate teaching and leadership abilities, conflict management, and the ability to effectively make and manage change
- Facilitates the utilization of nursing staff resources throughout the organization by:
- Understanding the organizational services
- Understanding the staff to patient ratios for the various services and the variability of these ratios i.e. patient acuity, experience of staff, etc.
- Support, attend, and facilitate corporate and own program specific meetings and quality initiatives (i.e., Corporate Orientation, Professional Practice Committee, Unit-Based councils)
- Report and investigate safety concerns according to Schroeder Ambulatory Centre's policies and procedures; collaborate to address quality and risk management issues in consultation with reporting manager
- Maintains a safe and healthy work environment for all staff, patients, visitors, physicians, volunteers and families
- Perform additional duties and undertake special projects as assigned
Corporate Responsibilities:
- Participate in all mandatory training requirements and work in compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and Regulations, company Policies and Procedures, as well as established industry guidelines
Skills & Qualifications:
- Minimum 5 years relevant clinical experience is required
- 3 + years Teaching or leadership experience and/or equivalent healthcare experience is preferred
- Current registration and membership in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO) is required
- Master's Degree in Nursing/Education completed or in progress is preferred
- Baccalaureate Degree in Nursing is required
- Critical Care Certificate and Critical Care experience required
- BCLS & ACLS Instructor Certificate issued by Heart & Stroke Foundation, is required within one year of hire
- Excellent communication, coaching, facilitation, and presentation skills combined with the ability to teach in a classroom, simulation and clinical setting
- Strong organizational, planning, time-management, and problem-solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.
- Commitment to lifelong learning and ongoing professional development.
- Able to provide required immunization/TB records and pass a criminal/vulnerable sector check.
