Other:
General office environment. Some travel throughout the City of Kawartha Lakes may be necessary in accordance with job requirements.
Job Description
- Responsible for daily maintenance and janitorial cleaning of Housing buildings and grounds;
- Pick up litter, vacuum, wash, strip and wax floors, wash walls, clean appliances and building fixtures;
- Perform and log preventative maintenance program as required i.e. Change filters, oil mechanical equipment, inspect equipment;
- Troubleshoot and perform minor plumbing, electrical, carpentry, drywall, glazing, screening, lock repairs, change lights, painting, floor repairs, etc.;
- Perform inspections of fire safety systems as required by the Ontario Fire Code;
- Maintain waste disposal rooms, recycling facilities, and carry out compacted garbage bags for curb side pick-up;
- Cut and trim lawns, prepare and plant flower and shrub beds, clean debris from lawns;
- Clear snow from sidewalks, walkways, and plough parking lots including shovelling snow by hand and using a walk behind snow blower;
- Salt and sand sidewalks, walkways and parking lots;
- Perform minor repairs, and clean vacant apartments and houses including lifting and carrying heavy furniture up or down flights of stairs and loading and unloading trucks by hand;
- Provide written reports and complete work orders;
- Report hazards and building deficiencies to Supervisor;
- Ability to respond to emergencies on a 24 hour, 7 days a week basis when required, and carry a pager or cell phone;
- Ability to work varied shifts as required;
- Ability to work with minimal supervision;
- Perform other related duties as assigned
Skills/Education Required
- Secondary School diploma
- Minimum 2 years of related experience in building operations, cleaning and grounds maintenance
- Ability to understand and interact sensitively, respectfully, and non-judgementally with people from diverse backgrounds with a wide range of needs and issues. This includes people experiencing poverty, mental illness, trauma, addictions, behavioural issues, cognitive impairment, disabilities, and interpersonal issues
- Previous experience driving ¾ ton pick-up and ploughing parking lots
- Certified Playground Inspector designation an asset, but not essential
- Knowledge of safe work practices, PPE, and WHIMS
- Demonstrated ability to follow written and oral instructions and work in a team environment
- Demonstrated ability to operate hand tools and gasoline or electric motorized equipment
- Demonstrated ability to operate custodial equipment including power floor scrubbers, auto scrubbers, carpet extractors, wet/dry vacuums etc.
- Demonstrated ability to operate small tractors with power take-off attachments
- Effective oral and written communication and strong interpersonal skills to deal with members of the public, council and all levels of staff
- Ability to demonstrate initiative consistently with commitment to quality improvement, sharing process improvement initiatives with management
- Basic computer skills including email
- Possess and maintain a valid Ontario Class "G" Driver's Licence and have the use of a vehicle for travel from site to site during working hours as required
- Upon a conditional offer of employment, an acceptable Criminal Record Check, including a Vulnerable Sector Search will be required
