Organization Description
Global Water Futures Observatories (GWFO) is Canada's leading freshwater research facility, supported in part by the Canada Foundation for Innovation and its Major Science Initiatives program from 2023 to 2029. GWFO facilitates critical water research to protect Canadian water resources in a rapidly changing environment. With 64 observation sites across Canada, specialized field measurement systems, and 18 advanced water laboratories at partner universities, GWFO supports collection and sharing of water quality and environmental research data. Its geographical focus includes major transboundary river basins such as Yukon, Mackenzie, Saskatchewan–Nelson, and Great Lakes–St. Lawrence. Led by the University of Saskatchewan, it collaborates with several prominent Canadian universities to drive impactful water research.
Role Description
This is a full-time on-site role located in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, for an Outreach Specialist at Global Water Futures Observatories. The Outreach Specialist will develop and implement community outreach plans, establish and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders, and communicate GWFO's mission and research outcomes to diverse audiences. The role involves coordinating network communications, organizing public engagement activities, creating outreach materials, and contributing to the dissemination of critical information related to water research. Conducting research on outreach best practices and providing exceptional customer service to partners and stakeholders are also key responsibilities.
Qualifications
Education:
Bachelor's degree in environmental science or a related field, with a minimum of five (5) years of relevant experience.
Experience:
Background in water research, climate science, or environmental communications and outreach is highly desirable.
Skills:
- Ability to simplify complex water science for diverse audiences
- Experience in public engagement, media relations, and educational outreach
- Strong relationship-building skills with Indigenous communities, government agencies, NGOs, and the public
- Skilled in facilitating workshops, consultations, and collaborative initiatives
- Competence in planning, executing, and evaluating outreach campaigns and events
- Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
- Proficiency in social media management, website content development, and digital storytelling
- Familiarity with design and editing tools (e.g., Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, video editing software)
- Strong writing ability for reports, newsletters, press releases, and grant proposals
- Comfortable presenting to varied audiences, from academic groups to community organizations
- Understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems and respectful engagement practices
- Sensitivity to cultural diversity and environmental justice issues
Personal Suitability:
An ideal Outreach Specialist for GWFO would be an energetic, culturally sensitive and empathetic communicator, passionate about environmental stewardship and skilled at building relationships across diverse communities. They should be adaptable, creative, and professional, with a strong ability to listen to and engage with people, to identify and highlight the societal relevance of scientific data, and complex scientific concepts into accessible and meaningful outreach.
