About the Vancouver Prostate Centre Mass Spectrometry Core

The Vancouver Prostate Centre's Mass Spectrometry (MS) facility has been delivering advanced analytical services to the biomedical research community for more than 20 years. Our facility supports a wide range of studies, from discovery science to translational research, through cutting-edge mass spectrometry instrumentation.

We operate:

• Waters Acquity LC with Quattro Premier triple quadrupole for targeted small-molecule workflows
• Thermo EasyNano1200 coupled with an Orbitrap Lumos for high-resolution proteomics
• Additional Waters LC systems for fractionation and column packing

The Core is a mission-driven facility dedicated to providing robust, high-quality data and innovative workflow solutions to academic and industry partners.

Position Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Mass Spectrometry Specialist to ultimately lead LC-MS operations, ensure maximum instrument uptime, and deliver exceptional analytical results. Must be a team player and take directions from Core management. This role is ideal for a technical professional who thrives in a hands-on, instrument-intensive environment and enjoys solving complex challenges. You will play a key role in designing and optimizing workflows, supporting researchers, and ensuring the Core's instrumentation consistently performs at the highest standards.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform routine, preventive maintenance and calibration of LC-MS instrumentation (triple quadrupole and Orbitrap systems).
• Diagnose and troubleshoot instrument and workflow issues to minimize downtime.
• Implement and refine standard operating procedures (SOPs) to ensure reliable, reproducible results.
• Lead method development, assay qualification, and validation for a wide range of analytes, including metabolites, xenobiotics, and proteomics workflows.
• Manage sample preparation pipelines and oversee day-to-day instrument operations.
• Provide technical guidance to researchers, ensuring optimal experimental design and sample handling.
• Process, extract, and interpret large datasets, providing actionable results.
• Maintain a secure, organized data management and archiving system for internal and external clients.
• Collaborate with leadership to recommend instrument upgrades and workflow improvements.

Works under the general direction and supervision of the PI and Project Manager.

Minimum Qualifications and Experience

• MSc or PhD in Analytical Chemistry, Bioanalytical Chemistry, or related discipline; equivalent technical expertise also considered.
• Minimum 2 years of hands-on experience with LC-MS systems, preferably in a core facility or service-oriented environment.
• Proven expertise with Triple Quadrupole and/or Orbitrap mass spectrometers.
• Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting skills for complex instrumentation.
• Demonstrated ability to manage instrument scheduling, maintenance logs, and QC tracking.
• Excellent organizational and communication skills with a strong focus on data quality and reproducibility.
• Commitment to continuous technical development and staying current with evolving mass spectrometry technologies.

Hours of Work and Compensation

This is a temporary, full-time position.

Location: The M.H. Mohseni Institute and Vancouver Prostate Centre – Advanced Genomics and Computer Science Core

Salary range: $75, $92,600.00 per annum depending on experience

Reports to: Principal Investigator (PI)
