As a Labour Relations Officer, you'll play a vital role in reducing workplace conflict and promoting harmonious labour relations—helping employers, unions, and employees reach fair settlements that support safer, more productive workplaces across the province.

About the job

In this position, you will:

  • Mediate disputes and conduct settlement meetings for arm's length tribunals
  • Analyze cases to determine legal issues, likely results, potential problem areas and the best mediation approach
  • Prepare documents and reports for parties during vote process
  • Draft terms of settlements
  • Mediates reprisal complaints and appeals of orders
  • Assist in the training of new staff
What you bring to the team
Mandatory requirements
  • The position requires the successful candidate to have a valid G license or equivalent. The offer of employment is conditional upon the successful candidate providing proof that s/he has a valid driver's license upon being hired.
Technical Knowledge and Expertise:
  • You have experience applying labour relations theory and practices, relevant legislation, statutes and regulations, rules of evidence and conduct of hearings, and the OLRB's Rules, practices, processes and policies.
  • You have demonstrated experience applying employment standards and health and safety practices, processes, and policies.
  • You have proven knowledge of employment rights under common law, labour relations/employment law trends and of relevant Board jurisprudence.
  • You have knowledge of collective bargaining processes, methods, and conventions; grievance administration; and pensions, job descriptions, wage plans, recruitment and training.
  • You have experience applying mediation techniques and practices to labour and employment disputes.
Communication and Interpersonal Skills:
  • You can coordinate content from various stakeholders for mediation sessions.
  • You can provide counsel and guidance to other staff.
  • You can provide information to voters, and information regarding legislation, processes, rules, case law and guidelines to internal and external stakeholders.
  • You have demonstrated writing skills to prepare clear and concise memoranda of settlement and vote-related paperwork.
  • You have interpersonal skills to communicate and resolve problems and contentious issues, and de-escalate tense and difficult disputes.
  • You have relationship management skills to build a network with a multitude of stakeholders.
  • You are capable of working with case management and administrative systems.
  • You can assist in the orientation and training of new staff.
Conflict Management and Negotiation Skills:
  • You have experience managing labour/employment disputes and in reaching agreements and settlements.
  • You have demonstrated experience resolving sensitive and complex issues related to unfair labour practice complaints, sale of business/related employer applications etc.
  • You have and can apply developed interpersonal skills to gain credibility of parties in a mediation setting.
  • You have proven resolution skills to mediate confrontational and hostile situations.
Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:
  • You have experience addressing and mitigating potential issues.
  • You have experience analyzing cases to determine legal issues and optimal mediation approaches.
  • You can complete work within tight timelines.
  • You can evaluate the issues, the history, the persons involved, and other factors to determine mediation strategies.
  • You can analyze cases to determine problem areas, legal issues, and the best mediation approach
