Position Summary

The Automotive Prepper is responsible for preparing vehicles for the painting process by performing necessary body preparation tasks such as sanding, masking, priming, and cleaning. This role ensures high-quality paint finishes by following proper procedures and maintaining a clean, organized work environment. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, efficient, and knowledgeable about automotive refinishing practices.

Key Responsibilities

  • Prepare vehicle surfaces for painting, including sanding, feather-edging, applying body filler, and cleaning panels.
  • Mask vehicles to protect areas not being painted (trim, glass, wheels, etc.).
  • Apply primer, sealers, or other preparatory coatings as directed by the painter or production manager.
  • Inspect repaired areas for imperfections and correct them prior to painting.
  • Move vehicles in and out of the paint booth, prep area, and parking lot.
  • Maintain prep bays, tools, and equipment; ensure cleanliness and proper storage.
  • Mix materials and follow product technical sheets to ensure proper application.
  • Follow all safety guidelines, including proper use of PPE and handling of chemicals.
  • Communicate effectively with painters and body technicians to maintain workflow efficiency.
  • Perform other duties as assigned to support body shop operations.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (preferred).
  • Previous experience in automotive paint preparation or collision repair (preferred but not always required).
  • Strong understanding of sanding techniques, masking procedures, and surface preparation.
  • Ability to use hand tools, sanders, and other shop equipment.
  • Good attention to detail and quality workmanship.
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs and work in standing/walking positions for extended periods.
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
  • Willingness to follow safety guidelines and learn new techniques.

Working Conditions

  • Fast-paced body shop environment with exposure to chemicals, dust, fumes, and varying temperatures (PPE provided).
  • Requires bending, lifting, kneeling, and repetitive hand movements.
  • Work may include tight deadlines and coordination with multiple technicians.

Job Type: Full-time

Pay: $18.00-$25.00 per hour

Work Location: In person
