Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada The Tyee Full time

The Tyee team is growing We are happy to announce that we are creating and recruiting for a biodiversity reporter position in our newsroom. We're looking for an experienced journalist to join a growing bureau at The Tyee with a special focus on oceans and rivers in Western Canada.

The role will combine features and investigative reporting to examine the health and degradation of habitats and ecosystems, with a strong focus on public-interest journalism that holds institutions accountable, deepens public understanding of ecological change and examines solutions to these urgent problems.

This is a full-time position. We are looking for someone based in B.C. who is willing to travel for assignments on occasion. This is a staff position for a one-year contract, with the possibility of renewal.

Building on a long tradition of environment reporting at The Tyee, our coverage will bring readers to the frontlines of ecological change with immersive writing, diligent investigative work and deep research that connects the dots between governance and policy decisions and the health of our ecosystems. Reporting to a Tyee senior editor, the reporter will produce original articles for publication on The Tyee.

We are looking for someone with a blend of science communication, investigative and storytelling skills. We welcome applications from reporters of all experience levels, but a track record of reporting, especially in B.C., and/or formal journalism education will be considered an asset.

The right candidate will tick these boxes:

  • Strong reporting and writing skills, with a flair for narrative
  • Time management skills, including the ability to keep to tight deadlines
  • Team oriented and collaborative at heart
  • Familiar with The Tyee and our style of journalism
  • Legally entitled to work in Canada

The position is full time (37.5 hours per week), and the reporter can be based anywhere in B.C. Compensation is an annual salary of $63,131 to $69,444, depending on experience, with extended benefits after a three-month probationary period. Other benefits include a professional development budget and computer and phone stipends.

Employees start out with three weeks' paid vacation per year, plus paid time off during a yearly office shutdown between Christmas and New Year's Day.

Please visit our Careers page to submit your resumé and cover letter explaining why you are interested in this opportunity. The deadline for applications is Friday, Feb. 8.

We recognize the importance of a diverse workforce and encourage applications from people underrepresented in media, including but not limited to women, Indigenous people, Black people, people of colour, people of various gender identities, LGBTQ2S+ people and disabled people.

The interview process will consist of an initial screening call, an in-person or virtual interview with a hiring committee and a final conversation with the editor-in-chief. Please let us know if you require any assistance with your application and/or adjustments to the interview process.

This opportunity is made possible with support from the Wild Island Foundation for the Environment. Funding for reporting positions at The Tyee is provided with no editorial decision-making on behalf of the supporting organization. The Tyee retains editorial independence in all coverage decisions.
