Job description

The ideal candidate will leverage their expertise in environmental site assessments (ESAs) and remediation to support clients in managing contaminated sites across Alberta. Their primary responsibilities include leading field programs (Phase I, II, and III ESAs), developing and implementing remediation strategies, and preparing regulatory-compliant technical reports. The successful candidate will also play an interdisciplinary role, contributing to project planning, proposal development, and business growth initiatives. Core qualifications

  • University degree (e.g., B.Sc. or M.Sc.) in an environment focused program such as Environmental Science, Biology, Hydrogeology, or related discipline.
  • 7 to 10 years of environmental consulting experience, including preparing ESAs, remediation, and reclamation within Alberta's regulatory environment.
  • Professional designation (P.Geo., P.Ag., or P.Biol.).
  • Strong knowledge of Alberta regulations, including Alberta Tier 1 & 2 guidelines, Alberta Energy Regulator processes, and ERCB Directives 50/58; familiarity with Saskatchewan and British Columbia guidelines is considered an asset.
  • Experience managing contaminated sites, including soil and groundwater investigations, monitoring programs, remediation strategies, and risk assessments.
  • Excellent technical writing, communication, and data interpretation skills, with the ability to prepare and review high-quality technical reports.
  • Strong client-facing interpersonal skills with the ability to collaborate effectively in multidisciplinary teams and maintain positive client relationships.
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and capable of sound problem-solving and decision-making in fast-paced project environments.
  • Valid Class 5 driver's license and willingness to work in field settings, including urban, rural, and remote sites.
  • Superior written and verbal English communication skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to prioritize work.
  • Team-oriented and suited to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
  • Self-directed and able to work independently.

Core responsibilities

  • Plan and execute environmental site assessments (Phase I, II, and III ESAs), including drilling, soil/groundwater sampling, data interpretation, and preparation of regulatory-compliant technical reports.
  • Understand potential impacts of site activities, including spills, on vegetation, soil and groundwater.
  • Develop scopes of work, project budgets, and cost estimates for ESAs, remediation programs, reclamation activities, and related environmental projects.
  • Design, evaluate, and implement remediation and risk-management strategies, including assessments evaluated against Alberta Tier 1, Tier 2, remedial options analysis, and use of tools such as the Subsoil Salinity Tool.
  • Lead and oversee field programs on simple and complex sites.
  • Mentor, train, and supervise junior and intermediate staff in field execution, safety, and reporting.
  • Manage contractors and subcontractors, including procurement, coordination, performance oversight, and cost tracking.
  • Monitor project performance, ensuring alignment with scope, schedule, budget, regulatory requirements, and client expectations.
  • Conduct reclamation and vegetation management activities, and support reclamation certificate application processes across Alberta.
  • Manage and triage a diverse portfolio of sites across multiple years.
  • Submission of reports to appropriate regulatory agencies.
  • Liaise and communicate effectively with clients, regulators, Indigenous groups (if applicable), internal teams, and other stakeholders, including addressing regulatory updates and project status.
  • Contribute to proposals, business development, pre-qualifications, and multi-disciplinary project planning, supporting client relationship management and organizational growth.
  • Ensure strong adherence to health and safety policies and Occupational Health and Safety procedures, promoting safety leadership, compliance, and continuous improvement on all project sites.
  • Demonstrated ability to work safely in remote settings.
  • Deliver in a fast-paced, dynamic working environment.
  • Collaborate with staff across the company and externally in completing deliverables.
  • Complete required corporate operation and administrative activities (time entry, expense submissions, invoicing, reporting, etc.) as required, in a timely manner.
  • Support Maskwa employees in day-to-day business operations.

Location

This is a full-time hybrid position, preferably based out of our Calgary office located at Avenue SE or the Edmonton field office located at Avenue NW. Within this role, travel throughout Alberta will be required. Remote work would be considered for certain candidates.
