Metrolinx is connecting communities across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. Metrolinx operates GO Transit and UP Express, as well as the PRESTO fare payment system. We are also building new and improved rapid transit, including GO Expansion, Light Rail Transit routes, and major expansions to Toronto's subway system, to get people where they need to go, better, faster and easier. Our Operations, Safety team is seeking 2 System Safety Assurance Specialists to help shape the future of safe public transit across the Greater Golden Horseshoe. In this pivotal role, you'll evaluate system safety performance, lead assessments, and drive continuous improvement across major capital and operational projects—GO Expansion, LRTs, Subways, and more.
What will I be doing?
- Lead and conduct complex safety risk assessments and assurance reviews.
- Evaluate compliance with safety frameworks including ISO, CSA, Transport Canada regulations, and CENELEC standards.
- Identify root causes of safety issues and recommend corrective actions.
- Prepare independent, risk-based reports on system safety performance.
- Support proactive safety assessment programs aligned with legislation and international best practices.
- Develop system assurance standards and control processes with management.
- Create tools and reports to monitor safety performance and Risk Management Maturity (RM3).
- Provide subject matter expertise to leadership and stakeholders across capital and operational projects.
- Collaborate with internal teams and regulators to align on system assurance practices.
- Influence adoption of global best practices in safety monitoring and reporting.
- Contribute to internal and public safety reporting on compliance, KPIs, and culture.
Stay current with international standards, legislation, and industry trends.
What Skills and Qualifications Do I Need?
- Bachelor's degree in system safety, engineering, or a related field (or equivalent combination of education and experience).
- Demonstrated experience in system safety assurance, preferably within public transit.
- Proven knowledge of CENELEC standards, EU CSM, or CMREA frameworks.
- Expertise in risk management systems, root cause analysis, and corrective action planning.
- Familiarity with safety audit and compliance practices, including performance analytics.
- Knowledge of regulatory frameworks in rail, bus, and construction environments.
- Strong project management skills to juggle multiple assessments and deliverables.
- Skilled in developing KPIs and identifying performance trends.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement abilities.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office tools (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- P.Eng. designation in Ontario is an asset.
- Strong personal attributes: decisive, methodical, dependable, and collaborative.
