Markham, Ontario, Canada Aviva Full time
Experience Aviva

Individually we are people, but together we are Aviva. Individually these are just words, but together they are our Values – Care, Commitment, Community, and Confidence.

At Aviva Canada, we put people first, our employees, our customers, and our communities. We're proud of a culture built on care, inclusion, and collaboration, where your voice matters and your growth is supported. We're not just about insurance; we're about making a real difference by protecting what matters most.

The Opportunity

Join us in shaping the future of insurance resilience. At Aviva Canada, you will lead innovative climate scenario and geospatial analytics to meet and exceed OSFI B-15 Climate Risk Management expectations. Your work will embed climate risk insights into enterprise-wide decision-making — helping protect communities, drive innovation, and set sustainability standards in the P&C insurance industry.

This role is a great fit for candidates with either an actuarial or data science background, offering opportunities to apply your expertise in climate and geospatial risk analytics.

What you'll do:
  • Climate Scenario Analysis & Modeling: Develop methodologies and analytical tools to quantify impacts under multiple climate scenarios and time horizons, focusing on physical risks. Build and validate climate-conditioned CAT models using vendor platforms (e.g., RMS/Moody's) and internal statistical based climate risk models.

  • Geospatial & Climate Data Integration: Evaluate and integrate climate scenario data sources, hazard maps, damage functions, and geospatial datasets into robust data pipelines.

  • Quantitative Risk Metrics: Generate detailed and portfolio-level risk metrics including AAL, EP, PML and CvaR to assess climate-related exposures. Build interactive geospatial dashboards that translate complex data into actionable insights for business decision-making.

  • Model Governance & Compliance: Ensure proper documentation, validation, and governance of models in alignment with data and model risk management standards.

  • Cross-functional Collaboration: Partner with Finance, Risk, Sustainability, Pricing, ALM, Underwriting, and Aviva Group to embed climate metrics into strategic decisions.

  • Leadership & Mentorship: Lead and mentor a small team of actuaries, fostering technical excellence and innovation.

What you'll bring:
  • If you have an actuarial skill set: FCAS/FCIA with 5+ years or ACAS/ACIA with 10+ years of P&C actuarial experience, ideally with exposure to climate risk analytics, CAT/geospatial modeling, or capital modeling.

  • If you have a data science skill set: 5+ years in data science/engineering with extensive geospatial analytics experience, preferably in P&C insurance.

  • Strong proficiency in Python/R; familiarity with QGIS/ArcGIS.

  • Highly organized, collaborative, and capable of influencing stakeholders through clear, fact-based insights.

  • Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical audiences.

What makes you stand out:
  • Experience with CAT modeling, Bayesian statistics, and climate/hydrological modeling is an asset.

  • Familiarity with climate science, actuarial practices, and regulatory standards related to climate risk.

What you'll get:
  • Compelling rewards package including base compensation, eligibility for annual bonus, retirement savings, share plan, health benefits, personal wellness, and volunteer opportunities.

  • Hybrid flexible work model.

  • Outstanding career development opportunities.

  • We'll support your professional development education.

  • Competitive vacation package with the option to purchase 5 extra days off per year.

  • Employee-driven programs focused on gender, LGBTQ+, origins, diversity, and inclusion.

  • Corporate wellness programs to support our employees' physical and mental health.

Please note that we may use AI tools to help us through the recruitment process. This is a new position which has been posted internally & externally.

Aviva Canada has an accommodation process in place to provide accommodations for employees with disabilities. If upon commencement of employment you require a specific accommodation because of a disability, please contact your Talent Acquisition Partner so that an appropriate accommodation can be arranged. This process applies throughout your career with Aviva Canada.
