Environmental Programs Assistant – Richmond Nature Park

Overview

The Environmental Programs Assistant plays a key role on the Richmond Nature Park team, reporting to the Community Facilities Programmer. This position leads the development, coordination, and evaluation of year-round programs offered by the Richmond Nature Park Society. We are seeking a collaborative, enthusiastic individual with a passion for environmental education and experience in designing, marketing, delivering, and assessing programs focused on ecological sustainability.

Key Responsibilities

Program Development & Delivery

  • Design, implement, and evaluate engaging, age-appropriate activities and special events that support participants' social, physical, intellectual, creative, and emotional development.
  • Plan and assess seasonal offerings including day camps, public programs, special events, and school programs.
  • Facilitate school programs for elementary-aged children and support other educators in developing environmental programming.

Staff & Volunteer Supervision

  • Recruit, train, supervise, and evaluate program staff and volunteers.
  • Develop and deliver training for staff and volunteers.
  • Manage scheduling, payroll, and team meetings.
  • Provide mentorship and motivation to staff and volunteers.
  • Review and improve policies and procedures on an ongoing basis.

Customer Service & Communication

  • Deliver excellent customer service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Respond to inquiries and provide accurate program information, referrals, and guidance.
  • Address questions related to volunteers, programs, and facilities, escalating as needed.
  • Liaise with Richmond Nature Park Society, City staff, and other departments.

Safety & Risk Management

  • Implement and uphold risk management protocols for all programs and events.
  • Report incidents to appropriate City staff.
  • Ensure staff are trained in emergency procedures and safety equipment use.
  • Maintain a safe and supportive environment for all participants.

Administrative Duties

  • Manage program budgets.
  • Maintain program and event listings in the registration system.
  • Coordinate transportation for out-trips.
  • Create promotional materials and manage the Society's social media presence.
  • Maintain statistical reports and order supplies/equipment.
  • Perform other related duties as required.

Qualifications

Required

  • Minimum one year of experience in supervision, programming, and working with children.
  • At least one year of post-secondary education in environmental studies, education, or a related field—or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience in nature interpretation.
  • Emergency Child Care First Aid or Standard First Aid with CPR Level B (or higher).
  • Clear Police Information Check.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Due to grant funding requirements, applicants must be under 30 years of age.

Preferred

  • Experience with Xplor Recreation registration system.
  • Training or experience supporting individuals with additional needs.
  • Coaching and leadership experience.
  • Human resources and volunteer management experience.
  • Conflict resolution training.
  • Fluency in a second language.

Hours & Compensation

This is a 1-year position (52 weeks) with potential for extension. Hours vary seasonally:

  • January - May: 28 hrs/week at
    $27.20/hr
  • June - August: 35 hrs/week at $31.84/hr
  • September - December: 28 hrs/week at
    $27.20/hr

Note: Schedule may vary based on operational needs.

Working Conditions

Work is conducted both indoors in an office setting and outdoors on forested trails.
