Position Title: LAND CODE ADVISOR
Reports to: Director, Natural Resources
Job Overview
The Land Code Advisor plays a senior role in ensuring the effective administration, review, and development of the Haisla Land Code. Reporting to the Director, Natural Resources, this position will be responsible for leading the review of the current Land Code, proposing necessary amendments, and providing guidance on the development and implementation of processes, systems, and procedures related to the Land Code. The Land Code Advisor will work closely with internal teams, community members, and external partners to ensure that the Land Code is aligned with the Haisla Nation's goals, legal requirements, and best practices.

The Haisla Nation is the band government of the Haisla people. Our mission is to build a powerful, prosperous and proud community, healthy in mind, body and spirit. We believe in building a strong and thriving community, with healthy and happy members and a sustained and prosperous environment. We are about 2023+ people, with approximately 700 living in Kitamaat Village. We have lived off the land and waters of our traditional territory for thousands of years, and it remains the focus of all we do.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Lead the review and amendment of the Haisla Land Code, ensuring it reflects current needs, legal standards, and community priorities.
- Develop and implement systems, processes, and procedures to improve the application of the Land Code.
- Collaborate with the Lands and Title team and other stakeholders to identify areas for improvement in land governance.
- Provide strategic advice and guidance on land-related matters and policy development.
- Liaise with the Land Advisory Board (LAB), ensuring alignment with best practices and proper governance in land administration.
- Ensure the Land Code aligns with the Haisla Nation's broader policies and initiatives.
- Coordinate meetings with the LAB, prepare meeting agendas, and take minutes.
- Maintain and update the LAB's Best Practices for Land Code Implementation Manual.
- Manage all records related to the Land Code, ensuring the proper documentation, filing, and retrieval of paper and electronic records.
- Monitor and report on the effectiveness of the Land Code implementation and propose adjustments as needed.
- Stay up to date with changes in relevant legislation and policy that impact land management and governance.
Skills & Qualifications
- A post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field, such as land management, law, or public administration.
- A minimum of 5-7 years of relevant experience in land code administration, governance, or land management.
- Strong knowledge of land laws, policies, and best practices in First Nations governance.
- Proven ability to lead projects and guide complex policy development.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written, with experience preparing reports, presentations, and meeting materials.
- Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- High-level organizational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.
- Experience working with land advisory bodies and other governance structures is an asset.
- Valid BC driver's license is an asset.
- Satisfactory completion of a criminal record check (with vulnerable sector screening if relevant).

Salary Range: $34.90/hr - $43.12/hr
