Overview

ALERT Inc. (Atlantic Environment Response Team) is one of only four marine response organizations certified by Transport Canada – Marine Safety under the Canada Shipping Act The role of ALERT is to provide marine oil spill response services and to mitigate the impacts within the Bay of Fundy and its coastline and while focusing on the safety of both responders and the public.

Job Description

The Spill Response Technical Lead is a key contributor to the spill response team. They report directly to the Operations Manager or designate to perform and supervise equipment maintenance and maintain operational reliability. ALERT requires Spill Response Technical Leads to supervise and execute all aspects of preparedness and spill response operations. This includes equipment maintenance, facility maintenance and, participating in training and exercises. During oil spill responses, the Spill Response Technical Lead will be asked to supervise on-water, shoreline cleanup, and command functions.

Based in Saint John, New Brunswick, this role reports directly to the Operations Manager or designate to perform and supervise equipment maintenance and maintain operational reliability. ALERT requires Spill Response Technical Leads to supervise and execute all aspects of preparedness and spill response operations. This includes equipment maintenance, facility maintenance, and participating in training and exercises. During oil spill responses, the Spill Response Technical Lead will be asked to supervise on-water, shoreline cleanup, and command functions. This position is a combination of warehouse environment and field work in a heavy industrial environment. You must be able to work outdoors in year-round weather conditions, able to bend, climb, stoop, kneel, crawl, etc. and lift up to 30lbs. You must be comfortable with high elevation climbing and working at heights and being on your feet for extended periods. Full PPE as required by safety standards is also required. Additionally, you must be physically capable of riding/ operating an off-road vehicle and transporting trailers.

  • Maintain accountability for assigned personnel's safety and welfare during exercises and in the event of an oil spill. Deliver safety briefing for each operation (any field response or maintenance operation in which they would be leading other staff or contractors). Lead and direct field activity during an oil spill. Support all on-shore and on-water oil spill equipment deployment.
  • In day to day execution of work or during oil spill response, find errors or omissions in a process, develop process improvement, and monitor changing situations for input that will drive a change in process or strategy.
  • Utilize maintenance and accounting software to track maintenance and operational activities. Contribute to budget development and participate in monitoring and stewarding to budget
  • Organize, oversee, and plan daily maintenance activities for dedicated contractor resources and warehouse activity. Execute on the planned maintenance schedule for all ALERT Inc. owned response equipment including marine assets, Oil skimmers & Oil recovery systems, and 50,000+ feet of oil boom. Schedule and coordinate any third party/outsourced maintenance. Record work and report any deficiencies.
  • Operate various machinery including forklift, small hand tools and hydraulic (HIAB) cranes.

  • Post-secondary education in trades; must be knowledgeable about industrial equipment, tools, and other materials. Training or certificates required in; SVOP, ROC-M or better, Forklift, HIAB Crane, MED A3 or greater, Fall arrest basic training (Optional), First aid/CPR, ICS , MSROC, Oil Spill Response and Strategies Training (OHMSETT), and Alert on water and shoreline supervisor course.
  • 5+ years' experience working in industrial or commercial marine
  • 2-3 years' experience in oil spill response.
  • Basic knowledge of mechanical or small engine maintenance.
  • Experience working in maintenance trades in a heavy industrial environment is an asset.
  • Class 3 Driver's license or the ability to acquire it within 9 months is required.

Job Type: Permanent

Pay: $60,000.00-$75,000.00 per year
