POSITION SUMMARY: Under the general supervision of the Program Supervisor - Children & Youth/Program Supervisor – Children, Youth and JIS/Program Supervisor – Customer Services & Programs, coordinates and administers recreation programs designed for children aged 5-13, and are designed to meet the needs of differing interests, ages and neighborhoods.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Develops and directs variety of dynamic and accessible programs.
  • Directs and supervises program staff in the performance of their duties, and visits all sites on a regular basis.
  • Completes administrative duties, including, but not limited to creating and updating staff, resource and program manuals, development of work schedule, collecting and compiling of information for statistical purposes, requisition and purchase of supplies, equipment/supply control, movement of equipment/supplies, maintenance of supplies, etc., and ensures a regular inventory is completed .
  • Conducts written evaluations/reports of training sessions, staff performance and program effectiveness, and submits a comprehensive report at the end of each program.
  • Assists Program Supervisors with the selection of camp staff, and conducts interviews and make recommendations for hire as required.
  • Develops, co-ordinates and assists in delivering training for head staff, staff and volunteers, as required.
  • Develops and implements a promotional strategy for all summer camps.
  • Conducts public relations activities, receives and answers public inquiries.
  • Maintains a detailed record of purchases and expenditures, conducts budget control activities, and maintains a detailed record of expenditures and revenues.
  • Develops, updates and implements safety procedures and ensure standards are met in all phases of camps operation.
  • Enforces all camp rules and regulations with respect to campers and staff.
  • Co-ordinates resource personnel at the camp.
  • Liaises with appropriate agencies and organizations in the community as well as Division staff. Facilitates the awareness of children's programs within the city by assisting in the coordination of existing services and by implementing new projects and programs.
  • Acts as a resource person for camp staff and other Division programs when necessary.
  • Facilitates the involvement of children with a disability in the program, including promotion of available services and liaison with parents/guardians.
  • Ensures that all children are treated with fairness, respect and understanding, and involve parent, where appropriate in the programming.
  • Reports to, collaborates with and meets with the Program Supervisor on a frequent basis.
  • Performs such other related duties as may be assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education/Experience:

  • Secondary school diploma;
  • Two years' recent experience in recreation programming specifically for ages 5-13 and administration;
  • Experience in supervision of staff
  • Volunteer Management experience
  • Proven leadership experience
  • Experience in developing training
  • Experience assessing community needs and interests for specific program development

Skills/Abilities:

  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing Self-starter with proven organizational skills Ability to work independently and as a member of a team
  • Independent judgment when dealing with confidential or sensitive issues
  • Ability to work in a diverse and dynamic environment
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Class "G" Ontario Drivers Licence, or equivalent
  • Must meet the definition of a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • Understanding of the recreational needs and interests of ages 5-13

Assets:

  • Bronze Cross
  • Developing nature based camping programs
  • Working with children with disabilities
  • Defensive Driving course
  • Thorough knowledge of the Playgrounds Program, Chippewa Programs and/or the Neighbourhood Recreation Program
  • Completion of leadership or coaching courses. Experience in leadership in camping programs.

TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Seasonal in nature End of August-June (irregular hours), May-beginning of September (5 days a week, 35-40 hours a week plus overnight sleep outs as scheduled)
  • Other irregular hours as required on a project management basis.

CONDITION OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • Must undergo a successful Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC)
  • Must remain a competent driver as defined by the Corporation
  • May be required to provide a successful driver's record (uncertified)
  • Must possess a valid First Aid Certificate, Level C CPR
  • May be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation
  • Must have completed, or be eligible to complete HIGH FIVE Principles of Healthy Childhood Development and Quest 2 courses
