The Opportunity:
Water Services ensures the delivery of a safe and reliable water distribution system that is capable of meeting peak demands with minimum disruption and provides dependable storm and sanitary sewer systems by conducting regular maintenance to minimize line or service failure.
The Water Services Equipment Operator (Pipelayer) performs a wide variety of duties individually and as a member of a team. The Pipelayer is primarily responsible for assembling and connecting pipe systems for water mains, sewers, and drains.
Responsibilities include:
- Participate in field level hazard assessments
- Read, and interpret engineered drawings
- Participate in pre-job planning to understand the project scope and specifications
- Assist in preparing areas for pipe installation to the required depth and slope
- Prepare proper bedding for pipe installation
- Accurately measure, cut, bevel, and fit pipes to fittings and valves in compliance with industry standards
- Identify pipes and interpret measurements to account for insert depth, bend radius, and deflection; select the appropriate coupling and gaskets
- Ensure torque of valves/fittings are in correct value and pattern
- Perform installation and repair work on manholes, catch basins, and vaults
- Install/repair fire hydrants and valves as required
- Tap and install water services; connect and install curb stops.
- Install sanitary and stormwater mains and services to grade
- Install, repair, disinfect, and flush watermains
- Conduct pressure tests and leak detection on installed pipelines
- Select and install correct shoring for trench safety
- Ensure correct slopes and setbacks for excavation are applied
- Ensure proper dewatering of excavations in accordance with safety and operational standards
- Install temp water service connections as required
- Select and install correct restraints and mechanical joint fittings
You Bring:
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Class 3 driver's licence with Q endorsement is required
- Valid Class 1 driver's licence would be considered an asset
- Standard First Aid and CPR would be considered an asset
- Level 1 Water Distribution and Wastewater Collection certification from Alberta Environment and Protected Areas would be considered an asset
- Two (2) or more years' experience in municipal water/sewer infrastructure installation and repair, construction, or related field is required
- Two (2) or more years' experience of Track Hoe experience would be considered an asset
- Knowledge and understanding of safety regulations, requirements, and safe work practices
- Demonstrated ability to operate equipment safely and effectively in all conditions
- Strong ability to work well with and assist others as a team member
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Willing to learn and complete all aspects of the position thoroughly and to department standards

Additional Information:
This is a full-time position with an average of 40 hours per week.
Must be willing to perform physically demanding tasks in all weather conditions, work overtime as required, and participate in the 24 hours on call schedule on a rotational basis.
