We are seeking a versatile research professional who excels at both advancing research projects and leading operational infrastructure. This unique dual role requires someone who can move research forward with hands-on execution while simultaneously building and managing the operational backbone of an emerging research lab.
You will spend approximately 70% of your time driving research projects forward - conducting analyses, writing manuscripts, coordinating data collection, managing stakeholder relationships - and 30% serving as the operational lead who ensures the lab functions effectively, partnerships flourish, and strategic opportunities are captured. This role is ideal for someone who thrives at the intersection of doing research and building research capacity, who can shift fluidly between writing a methods section and developing a partnership strategy, between analyzing qualitative data and representing the lab with external stakeholders.
In this role, you will:
- As Researcher: Move multiple projects toward publication and impact, manage research processes efficiently, and deliver high-quality outputs on time
- As Research Manager: Work with Dr. Nelson and Living Lab partners to build lab infrastructure from the founding stage, serve as a Lab representative with partners, ensure smooth operations, position the lab strategically within research and practice ecosystems
Research Execution (70%)
- Drive funded research projects forward including literature reviews, data collection, and analysis
- Write and contribute to manuscripts, research reports, and knowledge translation products
- Manage research ethics applications, amendments, and compliance
- Coordinate stakeholder engagement and maintain community partner relationships
- Prepare conference presentations, policy briefs, and grant components
- Synthesize findings across projects to identify strategic insights
Operational Leadership (30%)
- Serve as operational lead for Care in Common Living Lab infrastructure development
- Manage lab operations including budgets, timelines, resource allocation, and project tracking
- Develop lab systems for knowledge management, communications, and workflow
- Contribute to grant development with strategic input on feasibility and partnerships
- Represent the lab at meetings, networks, and forums
- Build the lab's brand and expand its reach within research and practice communities
Additional duties may be added as project progress
QualificationsRequired
- Master's degree with a minimum of 5 years of research experience in health services research, public health, rehabilitation science, or related field
- Demonstrated ability to manage and advance research projects independently
- Track record of research outputs (publications, reports, presentations)
- Proven operational or coordination experience - you know how to make things work
Preferred:
- Experience in implementation science, integrated care, or community-based research
- Knowledge of stroke care, rehabilitation, or chronic disease management
- Experience working with voluntary sector organizations
- Familiarity with Ontario Health Teams or integrated care models
- Grant writing experience
- Understanding of realist evaluation or participatory methods
Project management or operations experience in research settings
- Strong analytical skills with experience in qualitative and/or quantitative methods
- Strategic thinking combined with attention to operational detail
- Outstanding written and oral communication skills
- Comfortable representing an organization with senior partners and stakeholders
- Self-directed with the ability to manage competing priorities
You're someone who:
- Genuinely enjoys both the craft of research AND the work of building infrastructure
- Can write a manuscript in the morning and strategize about partnerships in the afternoon
- Likes variety and doesn't want to be siloed in one function
- Has both research credibility and operational savvy
- Can represent the lab confidently with diverse audiences
- Wants to shape something from its inception rather than join established infrastructure
- Values impact and sees operations as essential to achieving it, not an administrative burden
Bruyère Health and its Research Institute are fully affiliated with the University of Ottawa, and have other regional academic, government, NGO, and industry partners engaged in collaborative research and innovation initiatives. Our research priorities include Aging and Long-Term Care, Palliative Care, Rehabilitation and Recovery, and Social Accountability (encompassing Primary Care and Health Equity).
About the LabThe Care in Common Living Lab is a rehabilitation-focused innovation engine that bridges implementation science with community partnership approaches. We use stroke care as a primary exemplar for developing scalable models across clinical programs, with particular emphasis on healthcare integration, social prescribing, and collaborative governance mechanisms. The Lab is led by Dr. Michelle Nelson.
