Reporting to the Radiation Protection Manager, the Radiation Protection Specialist (RPS) is responsible for supporting the radiation protection program on a project. This involves implementing, monitoring, and ensuring compliance with radiation protection activities, conducting assessments, and applying industry best practices. The RPS will contribute to the day-to-day operations of the project radiation protection program and assist with the field implementation of CNSC and client-compliant RP program elements.
This position is located in Port Hope, ON
What You'll Be Working On
- Support the Radiation Protection Program and assist in its execution.
- Identify and solve complex radiological protection problems with guidance from senior team members.
- Assist in developing new concepts, processes, and practices to meet RP program, project delivery, and business requirements.
- Provide health physics and radiological protection advice to senior and facility management as required.
- Contribute to preparing complex technical reports and keeping informed of the latest technological developments and RP practices.
- Review and assist in the technical review of RP program, procedures, and instructions for accuracy, adequacy, and compliance with RP program requirements.
- Assist in the interpretation and application of RP program requirements.
- Help prepare and revise radiation protection requirements, manuals, and procedures.
- Effectively communicate important technical information to organizational members, industry colleagues, project partners, and customers.
- Support the sharing of critical information that impacts individual, team, project, or organizational performance.
- Collaborate with health physicists and other team members in a team environment.
- Perform radiation protection tasks with guidance from senior staff, ensuring adherence to safety protocols and procedures.
- Other duties as assigned.
What We Are Looking For
- Undergraduate degree or diploma in sciences, engineering, health physics, or a related field from an accredited educational institution.
- A minimum of 3-5 years of experience in the nuclear industry, or relevant decommissioning/remediation projects, supporting operational health physics.
- Proven ability to provide radiation protection support and advice.
- Strong technical communication skills, including technical writing and document preparation/review.
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively within a team environment.
- Capable of understanding and applying safety and technical procedures and protocols.
- Knowledge and experience applying nuclear regulatory documents, codes, standards, safety culture, and concepts to assigned tasks.
- Experience with RP instrument setup, use, and troubleshooting.
- Understanding of radiation dose assessment for external and internal radiation hazards.
- Experience with emergency response to radiological upset conditions, shielding calculations, and airborne contamination monitoring.
- Experience in transport of dangerous goods (Class 7), including activity assessments and dose reporting.
- Familiarity with ALARA planning and review, work planning, and pre-and post-job briefs.
- Experience reviewing and assisting with procedural document revisions and approvals.
