Course # and title:  SOC433H5S:  Power and Cultural Politics

Course description:  This lecture course will ask students to engage with classic and contemporary view on power and its relation to the social bases of politics and social mvements?

Estimated course enrolment:  50

Estimated TA support:   100 hours (subject to enrolment)

Class schedule (Lectures):  Thursdays 11am - 1pm

Sessional dates of appointment:  January 1 - April 30, 2026

Salary:  Minimum stipend $9,820.70 for a Half course (inclusive of vacation pay)

Please note that should rates stipulated in the collective agreement vary from rates stated in this posting, the rates stated in the collective agreement shall prevail.

Minimum qualification:

Candidates must have at least an PhD in Sociology or equvalent as demonstrated by referred/published research, strong academic record, previous experience teaching a similar course, and evidence of teaching excellence in the subject covered in the course are preferred.

Description of duties:  All normal duties related to the design and teaching of a university credit course, including preparation and delivery of course content; development, administration and marking of assignments, tests and exams; calculation and submission of grades; holding regular office hours; supervising TA's assigned to course; order all necessary readings.

Preference in hiring is given to qualified individuals advanced to the rank of Sessional Lecturer II or Sessional Lecturer III in accordance with Article 14:12 of the CUPE 3902 Unit 3 collective agreement.

Please note: Undergraduate or graduate students and postdoctoral fellows of the University of Toronto are covered by the CUPE 3902 Unit 1 collective agreement rather than the Unit 3 collective agreement, and should not apply for positions posted under the Unit 3 collective agreement.
