The Canadian Centre for Climate Change and Adaptation (CCCCA) at the University of Prince Edward Island (UPEI) is seeking a Post-Doctoral Research Associate to work on several research projects on carbon emission reduction and mitigation. The CCCCA is a 45,000-square-foot research facility in St. Peter's Bay, PEI. The facility and its surrounding lands serve as a living laboratory, providing unlimited access to nearby wetlands, forests, and coastal habitats. The CCCCA is a world-leading research and teaching center dedicated to understanding and adapting to the impacts of climate change.
Term:
February 1, 2026, to March 31, 2028 (Term may be reduced or extended depending on performance, available funding, and the University's requirements).
RESPONSIBILITIES:
The research focus of this position will include:
- Quantifying and analyzing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from agricultural systems in Atlantic Canada through field-based measurements
- Application of machine learning–based modeling to support climate-smart best management practices (BMPs) for agricultural production.
- Assessing crop physiological and photosynthetic responses to climate variability and management practices, linking plant-level indicators with soil processes and GHG dynamics.
- Evaluating the soil amendment and regenerative agriculture strategies integrating circular bioeconomy principles to enhance soil health, climate resilience, and sustainable production.
- Developing and implementing irrigation strategies to enhance potato yield and drought resilience, and to identify water management practices that reduce yield losses under drought stress.
- Integrate remote sensing, spatial analysis, and economic assessment to support profitability and sustainability mapping and facilitate knowledge transfer to producers and stakeholders.
In addition to leading these research activities, the Post-Doctoral Research Associate is expected to:
- Publish research results promptly in high-impact journals.
- Write project reports and assist with research proposals.
- Collect soil, crop, yield, and sensor data from lab and field environments.
- Analyze research data using advanced statistical, geospatial, and modeling techniques.
- Organize meetings, workshops, and training courses for farmers.
- Supervise and mentor graduate and undergraduate students working on various pillars of ongoing research.
QUALIFICATIONS:
- PhD in agricultural engineering, Agricultural Water and Soil Engineering, or related fields.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills.
- Strong quantitative analysis skills.
- Self-motivated and have demonstrated experience managing multiple tasks.
- Strong quantitative analysis and data visualization skills for environmental data analysis.
- Be willing to collaborate and work with a multi-disciplinary research team.
- Ability to work independently and in a team.
- Commitment to a collegial and inclusive workplace.
- Experience working with external partners and collaborators.
Hours of Work: 37.5 hours per week
Salary: $50 000 per annum (Grant Funded) and Additional Benefits
