Job Title: Bail Verification and Supervision Worker
Reports to: Executive Director
Purpose:
The Bail Worker is to supervise and provide supports to the participants of our Bail Program. The program is a legally mandated program that provides supervision, support, and guidance for women and gender-diverse people released from custody on bail. The Bail worker is to provide verified information via oral and written communications to the Courts and various systems within the Justice System, in accordance with outlined policies and procedures.
Intake:
- Conduct the intake process with women in custody who have been referred to the bail program
- Verify information provided through the application process with collaterals
- Submit regular bail reports
- Participate in court proceedings as required, including testifying in court, submitting pre-trail documents, and providing support during court hearings
Program Participant Support:
- Provide information to women and gender-diverse people regarding processes, procedures, and conditions involved with the bail program
- Provide supervision and intensive support to women and gender-diverse people involved in the bail program
- Submit allegations of non-compliance and breaches of bail conditions when there is evidence to support such allegation
- Ensure bail participants attend any and all legal proceedings by escorting them to and from court and accompanying them as a support person
- Maintain strict confidentiality with all clients
Relationship Building:
- Connect women and gender-diverse people to community resources as needed
- Advocate for women and gender-diverse people in the bail program and assist them to navigate systemic barriers by building community relationships
- Building relationships with women and gender-diverse people in custody to ensure success when they enter the bail program
Interaction with the Public:
- Interact professionally and empathetically with bail program participants on a regular basis
- Regular interaction with the legal system, including visits to correctional facilities and courts
- Maintain a professional relationship with the public while supporting bail program participants
Working Conditions and Environment:
- Primarily working within an office setting, sitting at a desk and computer
- Other work locations within the community, including but not limited to: courts, crisis centers, correctional facilities, etc.
- Ongoing travel within the city of Winnipeg, possible travel outside the city of Winnipeg and within Manitoba
- May be asked to partner with another Bail Worker if after hours visits to residences are required
Tools and Equipment:
- Must have access to a reliable vehicle
- Participation in on-call rotations after hours has the requirement to carry a cellphone
- Demonstrates computer proficiency skills, including Microsoft Office Suites
Knowledge and Skills:
- Demonstrated working knowledge of the criminal justice system
- Has awareness and understanding of indigenous community needs including the impacts of historical traumas and events
- Knowledge of how colonialism and criminalization impact Indigenous women
- Familiarity with and experience working with LGBTQ2S+ persons
- Problem-solving skills
- Leadership and organizational skills
- Ability to coordinate programing requirements with co-workers, the legal system, and community agencies
- Ability to work independently within the policies and procedures as outlined, while respecting the vision, mission, and core values of the agency
Education and Licensing:
- Post-secondary education in a relevant field, or combination of relevant knowledge and experience
- Must possess a valid Manitoba Drivers' License
- Must have a clear criminal record check and ability to gain security clearance to the Winnipeg Remand Center and the Women's Correctional Center
- Additional education/certifications that can be obtained include trauma informed approach, CPR, Crisis Intervention, anti-racism training, Naloxone training, de-escalation training, First-Aid
Experience:
- 2 – 4 years relevant experience working within a similar capacity, 4+ years' experience preferred
- Experience networking and communicating to build professional relationships in the legal system and the community and relevant community partners
