Job Summary
Edmonton Medical Group (EMG) is proud to partner with the George Spady Society in delivering high-quality medical care to individuals experiencing substance use challenges in the city of Edmonton. EMG is seeking a motivated and compassionate Nurse Practitioner to join its dedicated team within the George Spady Society's Medical Supported Detox (MSD) Program. This position offers the opportunity to work to the full scope of Nurse Practitioner practice in a supportive, collaborative, and client-centered environment.
The George Spady Society is widely recognized as a leader in the development and delivery of effective, client-centered services for individuals with substance-related disorders and co-occurring mental health conditions. The Medical Supported Detox Unit is a modern 60-bed facility located in a newly developed building in the West Jasper area.
Reporting to the Medical Director, the Nurse Practitioner is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating client care within the MSD program. Working to the full scope of practice, the Nurse Practitioner serves as the Most Responsible Provider (MRP), providing leadership and evidence-based care to individuals with substance use disorders in an interdisciplinary setting. Those holding Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licenses are encouraged to apply, and comprehensive training and mentorship will be provided to support the transition to proficient and independent practice.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide primary care to patients experiencing withdrawal and to patients in need of medical stabilization
- Perform physical exams and patient observations
- Record patient medical histories and symptoms
- Create patient care plans
- Order, administer and analyze diagnostic tests
- Diagnose health issues
- Prescribe necessary medications as required, which include Opioid Agonist Therapies (OATs)
- Detect changes in a patient's health and change treatment plans as necessary
- Administer medications and treatments that are evidence-based
- Evaluate responses to treatments and medications
- Refer to external service providers
- Lead a team of LPNs to meet the immediate medical needs of clients
- Educate patients on managing illnesses or injuries and disease prevention
- Motivate clients toward appropriate daily functioning, life skills, physical health mental health and substance use support services from a culturally sensitive lens
- Assess health, mental health, substance use and functional challenges within scope of practice
- Advocate for clients and contribute to the reduction of health disparities within the community.
- Contribute to clinical guideline development and implementation.
- Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to optimize client outcomes and enhance care coordination.
- Participate in quality improvement, research, and evidence-based practice initiatives
- Adhering to the professional, ethical and legal standards of practice and maintaining confidentiality.
- Engaging in ongoing professional development and continuing education.
Qualifications & Requirements.
- Master's degree in Nursing with Nurse Practitioner specialization from an accredited nursing program.
- Must have an active, unencumbered registration as a Nurse Practitioners license issued by CRNA, including Provisional Graduate Nurse Practitioner licensure.
- Must be trained, or willing to be trained in Opioid Agonist Therapy prescribing.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required.
- Experience in working with electronic health records.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification is an asset.
- Ability to communicate effectively, in verbal and written form, with social and medical partners at various levels within the community.
- Experience working with addictions and mental health is an asset
- Evidence to practice independently and within a multidisciplinary team consisting of licensed practical nurses (LPN), register nurses (RN), pharmacist, social workers and others.
- Knowledge of trauma-informed service provision approaches and best practices
Compensation and Hours
This is a contracted position; successful candidates will be required to work at least eight (8) hours of work, which may include weekend. Successful candidates will be required to be part of the on-call schedule. Compensation will be negotiable depending on experience.
