Temporary assignments shall terminate as shown above or the return of a permanent employee, but no later than June 26, 2026.
COPE Local 103 UNION AFFILIATION:
RESPONSIBILITIES: Under the supervision of the Superintendent of Educational Services, and in consultation with the school Principals, the School and Attendance Counsellor will be required to investigate those students who violate the compulsory attendance requirements of the Education Act; and where required, investigate cases of school suspensions
OTHER DUTIES INCLUDE:
- Assist in the identification, treatment, evaluation, and provide preventative counseling for those pupils whose behaviour, attitude or environmental circumstances indicate evidence of an apparent need for assistance;
- Establish home contact and counseling; maintain positive liaison between the home and school; provide consultation with school staff; consult with community agencies; and act as liaison and referring agent to outside agencies;
- Prepare and maintain pupil reports;
- Duties related to assisting pupils on long-term suspension and expulsion under Bill 212 (Safe Schools);
- Other related duties as required.
QUALIFICATIONS: The successful candidate will be a self-motivated, critical thinking team player with excellent organizational skills, and superior inter-personal and communication skills with:
- Bachelor of Social Work or Social Services Worker certification and experience as a Social Worker; related education and experience will be considered;
- 2-5 years of recent experience in an education setting; preferably at school level;
- Demonstrated skills in crisis intervention, counseling, developing creative solutions and problem solving;
- A high degree of flexibility, and the ability and attitude to be a positive, contributing member of a multi-disciplinary team;
- Knowledge of the Education Act Legislation and Regulations associated with compulsory school attendance, the Child Welfare Act, the Youth Criminal Justice Act and the legal system are assets;
- Familiarity with a wide range of special education needs and services;
- Dedication to continuing education and attending related Board sponsored courses/seminars;
- An excellent command of oral and written English; and
- A valid driver's license, is in good standing with the Ministry of Transportation, and has access to a
- Reliable mode of transportation for travel among the Board's schools and offices.
