This is a temporary replacement position for a bargaining unit employee. Terms and conditions of employment are as outlined in the Support Staff Collective Agreement.

This is a less than 12-month position.   This position will work from approximately Mid August to Mid June.

Located in Barrie and reporting to the Manager, Advising, the incumbent develops, implements, evaluates and promotes services for students with functional limitations that could be, but are not limited to physical, medical, mental health, learning and sensory abilities that impact their learning. The accessibility advisor works with students at any point during their academic career from pre-enrolment to graduation, to assess student needs and coordinate access to physical and other resources, technologies, counselling and formal assessments. The incumbent provides assessment and recommends accommodations related to the student's individual needs in accordance with the Ontario Human Rights Policy on Accessible Education for Students with Disabilities. The accessibility advisor liaises with academic areas (coordinators, deans and faculty) and other community partners, to offer guidance related to these academic accommodations. The incumbent also prepares bursary applications for submission and requests government funding for programs and equipment. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:


•    Assessing student needs and arranging accommodations for students within the academic and work integrated learning environment – class, labs, placements and testing centres

•    Advising and supporting students regarding their use of appropriate accommodations and learning expectations through recruitment, transition to postsecondary education, college life, graduation and the transition to employment 

•    Using non-clinical screeners to assess students and coordinating referrals and access to physical and other resources, technologies, counselling, student services and formal assessments

•    Monitoring academic progress, providing individualized study skill support and evaluating the accommodation plan to ensure it is addressing the student's learning needs

•    Advocating on behalf of students and encouraging self-advocacy

•    Liaising with academic areas and other community stakeholders to offer guidance related to academic accommodations and appropriate policy

•    Reviewing qualitative and quantitative assessment data to evaluate issues and recommend support strategies and referrals

•    Documenting and maintaining accurate and confidential electronic student records in compliance with relevant privacy legislation

•    Acting as the principle contact for individuals with disabilities, parents and high school resource teachers to help them explore postsecondary opportunities and implement transition programs 

•    Participation in on-site and virtual promotional activities to increase awareness of accessibility services, educational and funding opportunities 

•    Ongoing research, knowledge and application of current programs, legislation and funding opportunities for students with disabilities.  Requesting government funding for programs / equipment and administering bursaries (such as the Bursary for Students with Disabilities) by assessing students' eligibility, making recommendations, and monitoring spending following approvals

•    Initiating, overseeing and documenting various student services and programs for the purpose of informing the appropriate use of services, data collection, accurate accounting and funding reporting

Qualifications:

•    Successfully completed a three-year post secondary degree / diploma in a relevant field of study that may include, but is not limited to human services, psychology or sociology 

•    Three years' experience in the area of disability services in an education or human services environment

•    Ability to maintain confidentiality

•    Organizational, intake interviewing and assessment skills 

•    Experience with reviewing psychoeducational and other clinical assessments to determine students' needs and develop accommodation plans

•    Experience providing referrals to support services, advising and recommending support strategies, and facilitating meetings and workshops

•    Computer skills and experience with Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Teams, Power Point and Excel) / Outlook  

•    Advanced communication and interpersonal skills  

•    Demonstrated knowledge of legislation requirements, including but not limited to the Ontario Human Rights Code, Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, and Personal Health Information Protection Act

•    Demonstrated ability to work independently and in a team environment

•    Experience advocating for inclusive education and/ or people with disabilities is considered an asset

•    Experience with client data management systems to schedule and maintain case notes is considered an asset

•    Experience with adaptive technology and computer software would be an asset

•    Experience with the Colleges of Applied Arts and Technology system including specific program information and Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) is an asset
