This job posting represents multiple positions within different ministries and at various locations across Ontario. Certain cities may be located in distant or remote areas in Ontario and may not be accessible by public transit. - Summer placements are typically full-time (working 36.25hrs/week or 40 hrs/week). However some part-time placements MAY be available based on mutual agreement between the hiring manager and student, if operationally feasible. Please inquire at the interview stage.
Work Description
As a Municipal Advisor Assistant, you may have the opportunity to support the local government section in its role to provide advice and support to:
- Build the capacity of municipalities and service managers to comply with legislation and regulations governing the operations of municipal government, and to use tools and practices to deliver services and infrastructure more efficiently.
- Gather local/market intelligence about the capacity of municipalities and disseminate information and practices.
- Help service managers implement and meet the objectives of their housing and homelessness plans.
- Provide advice and support to municipalities in Central Ontario, and provide relevant information about Central Ontario municipalities to senior management.
You may have the opportunity to work on some or all of the following activities:
- Conduct research and prepare reports, briefing notes, presentations, and letters regarding municipal and affordable housing issues.
- Track and provide analysis on the following:
- Local/market intelligence
- Leading practices
- Implementation of initiatives, such as Housing and Homelessness Plans, Ontario Disaster Relief Assistance Program, and Leader's Forum.
- Review and update municipal governance and financial information.
- Coordinate the tracking of municipal and affordable housing project documents.
- Provide support to the delivery of a leader's forum or learning events for municipal stakeholders by finalizing event materials and logistics.
- Attend meetings with municipal government staff and participate in other special projects.
Mandatory requirements
You must meet all eligibility criteria by the first day of employment (contracts begin between May and July):
- Student Status: You must be enrolled in a secondary or post-secondary institution (currently or for the fall semester) OR you must have graduated within the past six months (for example, if you graduated in December, you can apply for and start a summer student position up until June of the following year).
- Age: You must be a minimum of 15 years of age. There is no maximum age limit.
- Residency: You must be a resident of Ontario during the term of employment.
- Work Status: You must be legally entitled to work in Canada and have a valid Canadian Social Insurance Number (SIN) for the full duration of your summer employment.

- You apply your written communication skills to record data and prepare a variety of documents (e.g. reports, briefing notes, etc.).
- You apply your verbal communication skills to provide advice to clients.
- You have knowledge of local government financial matters, and applicable policies and legislation.
- You apply your experience using Microsoft Office applications, such as Word (word processing) and Excel (spreadsheets), as well as databases, email, and the internet to conduct research and prepare a variety of documents.
- You apply your research and analytical skills to assess municipal issues and provide advice.
- You apply your planning and organizational skills to collect, organize, review, and verify information/data through review of files, reports, and other means.
- You work independently or as part of a team; you plan, organize and prioritize your work to meet competing deadlines.
- You must have a valid Ontario G2 (or higher) Driver's Licence or equivalent.
