Job Summary

The Global Engagement Coordinator will manage stakeholder engagement and secure research funding and partnership opportunities to support international scholars to visit the University of British Columbia's Animal Welfare Program (AWP). This position will provide strategic leadership in the preparation and delivery of visiting scholar initiatives, being responsible for external communications, partnership exploration and international visit coordination and collaborations. This position will work with individual visiting scholars to tailor their experience to ensure mutual benefits to the scholar and the AWP, and to advance the animal welfare field.

Organizational Status

This position is expected to work independently but with Dr. Dan Weary's oversight. The coordinator will be responsible for establishing contacts with domestic and international agencies and institutions with both external and internal funding sources on behalf of the AWP. The Coordinator works closely with AWP faculty and staff members, finance, communications, development and administrative staff as appropriate and is the key contact with Go Global.

Work Performed

  • Identifies, analyzes and assesses funding opportunities and international partners for the AWP, to secure suitable funding and partnerships for the AWP's scholar exchange initiative.

  • Leads meetings to refine project strategies and objectives to ensure overall work is in alignment with AWP's mission, funder objectives, and advancement of the animal welfare field.

  • Builds and maintains relationships with international universities in the animal welfare field to understand their needs and identify strategic scholar exchange opportunities.
  • Recruits and assesses international candidates for visiting AWP to ensure the candidates are a good fit for AWP's mission.
  • Works closely with visiting scholars and AWP faculty to develop individual scholars' visit goals, plans, and outcomes so as to mutually benefit the scholar and AWP's mission.
  • Maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date knowledge of funding and research opportunities and requirements and be able to match opportunities to visiting scholars' strengths and areas of expertise.
  • Tracks and monitors all active visiting scholar projects within the AWP and their annual outputs (i.e. funded research projects, published papers, project outcomes) to enable accurate reporting to stakeholders and evaluation of programs.
  • As necessary, assumes responsibility for planning, developing, editing, and disseminating project reports, presentations as well as other project information and communications.
  • Performs other related duties as required.

Consequence of Error/Judgement

The Global Engagement Coordinator has significant influence on the quality and effectiveness of the visiting scholar experience. Overall work is not subject to check, but final documents are signed by AWP faculty. Inappropriate judgement could result in loss of potential research collaborations, or in funding shortfalls for specific grants. The decisions made by the Coordinator may impact the image, reputation and financial status of the AWP, the Faculty of Land and Food Systems and the University.
