Position Summary

Gilson Construction is seeking an experienced and detail-oriented Mechanical Estimator to join our growing team in Halifax. The Mechanical Estimator will be responsible for preparing accurate and competitive cost estimates for mechanical systems including HVAC, plumbing, piping, and process systems across commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects. This role plays a critical part in supporting project success from pre-construction through award.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare detailed quantity take-offs and cost estimates for mechanical scopes of work.
• Analyze drawings, specifications, and tender documents to determine project requirements.
• Solicit and evaluate subcontractor and supplier pricing to ensure competitive and accurate bids.
• Develop budgets, conceptual estimates, and change order pricing as required.
• Identify project risks, scope gaps, and opportunities for value engineering.
• Collaborate with project managers, engineers, and field teams during pre-construction and handoff.
• Maintain estimating databases, historical cost data, and bid documentation.
• Participate in bid review meetings and assist with contract negotiations as needed.

Qualifications & Experience

• Diploma or degree in Mechanical Engineering, Construction Management, or related field (or equivalent experience).
• 3+ years of experience in mechanical estimating within commercial or industrial construction.
• Strong knowledge of HVAC, plumbing, piping systems, and applicable codes and standards.
• Proficiency with estimating software (e.g., Accubid, Trimble, Bluebeam, or similar) and Microsoft Excel.
• Excellent analytical, organizational, and time-management skills.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in a team environment.

Sheet Metal Estimator

Position Summary

Gilson Construction is currently seeking a skilled Sheet Metal Estimator to join our Halifax-based team. The successful candidate will be responsible for preparing accurate cost estimates and material take-offs for sheet metal and HVAC ductwork systems on a wide range of commercial, industrial, and institutional construction projects.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform detailed quantity take-offs and pricing for sheet metal and ductwork systems.
• Review drawings, specifications, and tender documents to define scope and pricing requirements.
• Prepare complete bid packages, including labour, material, equipment, and subcontract pricing.
• Coordinate with suppliers and subcontractors to obtain competitive pricing.
• Analyze bid documents to identify risks, omissions, and opportunities for cost savings.
• Support project handover from estimating to project management and field operations.
• Maintain accurate estimating records and cost histories.
• Assist with change order pricing and budget updates throughout the project lifecycle.

Qualifications & Experience

• Journeyperson Sheet Metal Worker or diploma in construction/engineering technology preferred.
• 3+ years of experience in sheet metal estimating or project coordination.
• Strong understanding of HVAC duct systems, fabrication methods, and installation practices.
• Experience with estimating and take-off software (e.g., Accubid, Bluebeam, Trimble, or similar).
• High attention to detail with strong organizational and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple bids under tight deadlines.
