Development Engineering and Construction Assistant (4 or 8 months)

Planning and Development Services

Hours: 35 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor new land development and infrastructure construction related to both developer agreements and development permits
  • Provide site inspections and document review for construction of municipal infrastructure within new developments to ensure engineering design and construction standards are complied with
  • Provide site inspections and document review of development permits to ensure compliance with the accepted drawings and best management practices
  • Provide field inspection reports on all construction activities and report discrepancies to the Coordinator, Development Engineering and Construction and monitor correction of identified discrepancies
  • Assist in the certification process for construction completion and final acceptance through conducting field inspections and office work as required
  • Assist in the review and acceptance of engineering record plans
  • Provide excellent customer service to internal and external customers regarding construction inspections, drainage and County specifications

Survey Assistant (8 months)

Transportation Engineering and Operations

Hours: 40 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Gain hands-on experience in topographic surveying using high-end survey equipment
  • Reduce field data into final deliverables within Autodesk Civil 3D for use by design engineers
  • Receive practical exposure to the full construction lifecycle—from interpreting designs to field layout
  • Perform QA/QC checks to ensure accuracy and compliance during construction
  • Measure quantities for inclusion in the schedule of quantities
  • Develop a well-rounded understanding of how geomatics supports civil engineering projects from initial survey through to final construction and see your field layout progress into a fully constructed and operational project

This opportunity provides well-rounded experience between field-based surveying activities and related office-based work.

Engineering Design Assistant (8 months)

Transportation Engineering and Operations

Hours: 40 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Create plan of records drawings using Civil 3D
  • General drafting assignments for department specific needs (including public presentations and standard details) for use by County staff, administration, and Council, utilizing design drafting software programs such as AutoCAD, etc.
  • Create drainage maps using LiDAR data to support infrastructure planning and stormwater management.
  • Successful candidates who demonstrate adequate skills and complete assigned tasks may be assigned additional design projects (tailored to fit their specific skill level)

Preference for students that have an interest in construction and transportation management - previous experience in road construction would be considered an asset.

Transportation Support Assistant (4 or 8 months)

Transportation Engineering and Operations

Hours: 40 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

  • In-field collection of traffic data in both urban and rural environments
  • Assist in traffic data review, raw data reduction and distribution of finished traffic studies and associated metrics
  • Locate and collect transportation infrastructure asset information to update as-built record drawings
  • Assist in the coordination and deployment of the Driver Feedback Sign program

This role consists of both office and in-field duties. This opportunity provides well-rounded experience between field-based traffic data collection activities and related office-based work.

Preference for students that have an interest in traffic and transportation management - previous experience performing field data collection and analysis would be considered an asset.

Capital Projects Engineering Assistant (4 or 8 months)

Transportation Engineering and Operations

Hours: 40 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide project management assistance to capital rehabilitation projects such as concrete and asphalt maintenance activities
  • Projects include arterial road rehabilitation, residential/rural road rehabilitation, parking lots/trails rehabilitation, and other special projects
  • Conduct and record construction site inspections, daily reports, and post construction activities
  • Attend and chair project meetings, record and update minutes, follow up on action items, etc.
  • Liaise with contractors, stakeholders, internal departments, and residents
  • Coordinate quality control activities for capital projects in both rural and urban areas
  • Provide survey investigations and analysis to both urban and rural areas
  • Seek solutions to assigned challenges on special projects through research and analysis

Preference for students that have an interest in construction and transportation management - previous experience in road construction would be considered an asset.

Traffic Engineering Assistant (8 months)

Transportation Engineering and Operations

Hours: 40 hours per week

Key Responsibilities

  • Model (using Synchro) and analyze intersection or corridor operations to support development and refinement of signal timing plans to address public inquiries and concerns
  • Prepare scenario comparisons and summarize operational performance to improve traffic safety and efficiency of signalized intersections or a corridor
  • Prepare and implement new traffic signal timing design and traffic controller programming
  • Prepare AutoCAD design drawings and preliminary cost estimates for construction projects
  • Conduct site visits and provide findings and preliminary recommendations for traffic safety and operation improvements, traffic sign and pavement marking placement
  • Collect survey points of field utility locates and update and create as-built construction drawings
  • Manage and support the operations of various traffic management systems
  • Support asset management tool design and database update to ensure data integrity and functionality

Preference for students that have an interest in traffic engineering and transportation management. Previous experience in traffic control, transportation engineering and road construction would be considered an asset.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Enrolled in the 1st year Northern Alberta Institute of Technology Civil Engineering Co-op student program along with satisfactory grades
  • Ability to interpret detailed engineering drawings and reports
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, AutoCAD and various other database programs
  • Ability to plan, organize and complete assignments
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills

Conditions of Employment

  • All roles require candidates to currently possess a valid Class 5 Alberta Drivers Licence and submit a Drivers Abstract with less than 7 demerits

Some roles MAY require the following (will be confirmed in the interview process):

  • Reliable personal transportation may be required (no public transit routes to the Transportation Engineering and Operations office) – mileage for work use will be reimbursed in accordance with Strathcona County vehicle allowance policies
  • Ability to work in an office environment and/or in the field as required
  • Ability to work some overtime (evenings and weekends) as required
