Role Summary
A Governance Board, the Board of Directors focuses on the Vision and Mission of the
Alzheimer Society with a primary activity being the establishment of goals for the
organization, and the monitoring of the progress toward their accomplishments.
The Board of Directors are accountable to exercise the powers and discharge the duties
of their office honestly and in good faith. Directors shall exercise the degree of care,
diligence, and skill that a reasonably prudent person would exercise in comparable
circumstances.
Responsibilities
• Applicants must be a minimum age of 18 years and must reside or work in
Peterborough, Kawartha Lakes, Northumberland, or Haliburton
• Attend monthly board meetings. It is expected that Directors will make every
effort to attend all meetings of the Board, including the Annual General Meeting
• Required to participate in one or more committees
• Approve/monitor policies, strategic and organizational planning, annual reviews,
and other recommendations received from the Board, its standing committees,
and Executive Director
• Vote on issues being discussed for approval
• Respect confidentiality of private discussions
• Act on behalf of ASPKLNH, and in the best interest of ASPKLNH
• Expected to remain informed about issues related to dementia, including
treatment(s) and management support efforts to enhance Board effectiveness
Required Skills/Experience
• Positive and proactive attitude with good professional judgement
• Team orientated with leadership abilities
• Strong communication skills and interpersonal skills
• Commitment to compliance to privacy, confidentiality, and conflict of interest
policies
• Serve as an active advocate and ambassador for the organization
• Willingness to participate in the Walk for Alzheimer's and/or other fundraising
events
• Experience in a non-profit governance is preferred
Time Commitment
• Ability to participate in a time commitment of approximately 5-10 hours per
month (mainly evenings) for monthly board meetings and committee support
which includes time for review of emails and meeting preparation
• Ability to commit to a 3-year term with the opportunity to extend for a second 3-
year term (Board members are elected by current board membership).
Training Requirements
• Orientation to agency, ASPKLNH programs, policies & procedures
• Board Orientation
• Participation in other training deemed mandatory for this volunteer function
Other Requirements
• Completion of two reference checks
• Vulnerable Sector Police Check Clearance
