About this opportunity:

Cenovus is currently looking for a Senior Commercial Advisor based in our St. John's office.

This role will liaise and build relationships with various Atlantic Region and Corporate departments, ensuring stakeholder engagement in commercial activities. Key departments will be legal, SCM, Finance, HSE, Tax, Treasury, Operations.

The role will manage and support review and approvals of commercial and JV agreements.

What you'll do:

  • Lead and support commercial negotiations with third parties, including joint venture partners and government entities.
  • Develop and implement commercial strategies aligned with corporate objectives and project timelines.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial contracts such as joint operating agreements (JOAs) and synergy agreements.
  • Ensure compliance with corporate policies, legal standards, and regulatory requirements.
  • Support maintenance of a contract database and track key obligations and milestones.
  • Identify and develop synergy opportunities with industry partners to optimize operations and reduce costs.
  • Support the creation and management of infrastructure sharing agreements.
  • Manage land tenure and licensing documentation in coordination with legal and land departments.
  • Analyze and support the resolution of royalty and fiscal issues.
  • Identify and assess commercial risks and develop mitigation strategies.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with internal stakeholders, government agencies, and external partners.
  • Represent the company in industry forums and consultations as needed.

Who you are:

Our ideal candidate will have the following minimum qualifications:

  • Legally authorized to work in Canada
  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, or a related field
  • Minimum of 8 years of experience in a commercial or business development role within the oil and gas industry
  • Strong understanding of upstream oil and gas operations, regulatory frameworks, and fiscal regimes
  • Excellent negotiation, communication, and analytical skills
  • Proficiency in contract law and commercial risk assessment
  • If the successful candidate is an Engineer, a member in good standing or eligible for registration with Professional Engineers and Geoscientists of Newfoundland & Labrador (PEGNL) is an asset
