Location, St. John's, NL

The Board of Trade is seeking an experienced leader to serve as Director, Employer Advisors, reporting directly to the CEO and supervising a team of Employer Advisors. In this role, you will shape and deliver services that empower local employers to navigate WorkplaceNL, occupational health and safety, and workers' compensation systems with confidence. By strengthening employer representation, advancing return-to-work strategies, and building member capacity, you will drive outcomes that make workplaces safer, stronger, and better positioned to succeed.

The Role

As Director, Employer Advisors, you will provide both strategic and operational leadership to the Board's employer advisors services. You will manage complex casework, oversee and mentor Employer Advisors, and represent the Board in important discussions with regulators, policymakers, and community stakeholders. This role combines hands-on expertise with strategic foresight, ensuring that the Board remains a trusted advocate for employers and a proactive voice in shaping the future of workplace legislation and practice in the province.

Key Areas of Leadership and Oversight:

  1. Strategic Advisors & Advocacy:
    Serve as the senior advisor on workers' compensation, occupational health and safety, and employer regulatory issues while leading advocacy efforts with WorkplaceNL, government, and regulatory bodies to ensure employer perspectives are well represented in policy and decision-making.
  2. Team Leadership & Accountability:
    Supervise, mentor, and support the Employer Advisors team to ensure consistent delivery of high-quality advisors, claims management, and training services, while building team capability through coaching, knowledge-sharing, and professional development.
  3. Policy & Research Leadership:
    Lead policy analysis, jurisdictional scans, and research to inform the Board's advocacy priorities, while preparing strategic briefing materials and employer guidance that amplify the voice of the business community.
  4. Training & Employer Engagement:
    Oversee the development and delivery of training, workshops, and resources that strengthen employer knowledge and workplace practices, while serving as a visible leader in the community to deepen member relationships and position the Board as a trusted partner to employers.

The Ideal Candidate

You are a seasoned professional who combines
deep expertise in workers' compensation, occupational health and safety, or employer advocacy
with proven leadership and team management experience. Equally comfortable advising on complex casework and influencing policy at a systems level, you are respected for your ability to translate complex legislation into practical strategies. You thrive in dynamic environments, balancing strategic oversight with day-to-day problem-solving, and you are motivated by the opportunity to strengthen both employers and the business community as a whole.

Qualifications and Experience:

While the Search Committee recognizes that no one candidate is likely to meet all qualifications in equal measure, those listed below are desirable and will be used to will guide our assessment of candidates.

  • A university degree in Business, Law, Human Resources, Kinesiology, Occupational Therapy, Political Science, or a related discipline (or equivalent education/experience).
  • At least 7–10 years of progressive experience in workers' compensation, occupational health and safety, employer advisors, or related fields.
  • Proven leadership experience managing teams and delivering results in advisors or advocacy roles.
  • Strong knowledge of WorkplaceNL legislation, occupational health and safety frameworks, and employer advocacy.
  • Demonstrated expertise in claims management, return-to-work planning, and policy analysis.
  • Exceptional communication and stakeholder engagement skills, with experience representing organizations at a senior level.
  • CPHR designation or progress toward it is considered an asset.

Skills and Attributes:

  • Advanced ability to interpret legislation, case law, and regulatory frameworks, applying sound judgment to guide organizational strategy and employer advocacy.
  • Proven capacity to supervise, mentor, and develop professional staff, fostering a high-performance team culture.
  • Skilled presenter and facilitator, able to engage and influence audiences ranging from employers to regulators, government officials, and community leaders.
  • Recognized ability to represent employer perspectives effectively, negotiate complex issues, and shape policy discussions at senior levels.
  • Capacity to navigate sensitive and contentious workplace issues with empathy, professionalism, and resilience under pressure.
  • Comfort operating in a dynamic environment with shifting priorities, balancing case-level detail with broader strategic considerations.
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills, with demonstrated experience in advocacy writing, strategic briefing, and public speaking.
  • Relationship-building skills, with the ability to establish credibility and trust with employers, policymakers, regulators, and community partners.
