Learning Strategist, Faculty of Arts

Reporting to the Dean, Faculty of Arts (FoA), the Learning Strategist supports the successful transition of students to Thompson Rivers University (TRU) through work with student mentors, TRU Academic Advisors, Student Awards and Financial Support, Practice Placement Coordinators, Indigenous Education Coordinators, Intercultural Coordinator, and other Learning Strategists.  This position also works closely with the Dean, and program chairs and coordinators to proactively ensure positive student experiences, transitions and supports.  This position provides support for students in navigating issues related to student success and Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Indigenous (EDII) issues by co-developing plans with FoA program chairs for student progression and success in the program.  These include education, programming, strategies, referrals, and technologies that support students' personal, social, and intellectual development.  Workload may fluctuate and alter to meet the demands and needs of students.  Special project work to support student success and retention, developed in collaboration with other partners, and as assigned by the Supervisor, is an important part of the position.  The incumbent is accountable to coordinate projects to completion.  The position works in collaboration with leadership within the FoA and colleagues in the Faculty of Student Development (FSD), Indigenous Student Development - Cplul'kw'ten, Indigenous Education, and TRU colleagues engaged in EDII work. 

MAJOR DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

1. In collaboration with FoA leadership, engages in planning, developing, coordinating, implementing and monitoring EDII programming to ensure effective student development.
2. Identifies opportunities to align with TRU's Strategic Plan, departmental goals, and other TRU initiatives.
3. Serves as a resource to students on issues and concerns related to diversity and equity through consultation and collaboration. 
4. Provides clear communication to students, faculty, staff, and others about initiatives and programs. 
5. Supports the resolution of challenging issues through consultation and collaboration with FoA leadership. 
6. Develops and manages a database to collect information regarding resources and to coordinate and develop individual cases and referrals.
7. Manages confidential information and abides by TRU privacy rules. 
8. Consults with faculty, staff, and administration in communicating referrals and actions to provide EDII support for students.
9. Coaches, advises, and supports students on appropriate study strategies and available resources and policies.
10. Develops information and resources for student populations from equity priority and deserving groups.
11. Collaborates to develop policy and processes with respect to student success and development.
12. Designs, organizes, and facilitates presentations and workshops related to students' adjustment to the institution within the context of EDI principles.  
13. Develops community and university partnerships through collaboration of various events and activities to support student engagement and success.
14. Participates in relevant committee and working groups to initiate and build student engagement and success.
15. Maintains currency in student development, mentorship, and fostering inclusive environments. 

REPORTS TO

Dean, Faculty of Arts

EDUCATION:

• Bachelor's degree in Education, Arts, or related field plus post graduate studies leading to a certification or designation

EXPERIENCE:

• Three years' experience working with students in a post-secondary institution or related environment, including:
  • Experience working with relational database software
  • Experience working as part of team, specifically in a case management support team
  • Experience with one-to-one tutoring/coaching
  • Experience working on issues of Equity, Diversity, Inclusion, and Indigenization in a healthcare, community or educational setting

WORKING CONDITIONS

• Some off campus travel may be required

• Hours of work may include evenings, early mornings, and some weekends to meet schedules of student population and departmental needs
