Reconnections Worker

Position Summary:

Guided by the Wet'suwet'en Holistic Wellness Conceptual Framework, the Reconnections Worker strengthens relationships between Wet'suwet'en children and youth in care, their extended families, and the Nation. This role ensures that every Wet'suwet'en child remains rooted in their identity, language, clan, and connection to Yintah (territory).

Working collaboratively with the Prevention ANABIP Team, the Wet'suwet'en Wellness Working Group, and all five Wet'suwet'en communities, the Reconnections Worker supports the delivery of culturally grounded, family-centered services that uphold Anuk Nu'at'en (our laws), promote healing, and restore belonging.

Roles and Responsibilities:

• Reconnecting Wet'suwet'en children in care to their extended families, house groups, and cultural roots;
• Monitoring adoptions to ensure families are informed and involved;
• Maintaining genealogical records and supporting access to family and clan histories;
• Supporting foster parents and agencies in understanding and honouring Wet'suwet'en culture and responsibilities; and
• Promoting community participation through education, coordination, and leadership across all five Wet'suwet'en communities.

Job Duties:

1. Family & Cultural Reconnections

• Facilitate connections between Wet'suwet'en children in care and their extended families, clans, and territories.
• Monitor adoptions to ensure family awareness and cultural inclusion.
• Maintain and update genealogical records and clan charts for ongoing reconnection work.
• Collect and organize family stories, photos, and cultural information for clan albums.
• Provide follow-up and support for youth who have aged out of care and wish to reconnect with family and Nation.

2. Cultural Education & Capacity Building

• Deliver Wet'suwet'en 101 and related training to foster parents, social workers, and partner agencies.
• Collaborate with Elders and Knowledge Holders to facilitate teachings, ceremonies, and language learning.
• Support participation in feasts, cultural gatherings, and culture camps.
• Promote the learning and daily use of Wet'suwet'en language and protocols in child and family services.

3. Community Engagement & Collaboration

• Actively engage with all five Wet'suwet'en communities to ensure local participation and representation.
• Sit on child welfare advisory boards for each community, ensuring Wet'suwet'en values are reflected in decisions.
• Liaise with the Ministry of Children and Family Development (MCFD), delegated agencies, and other partners to support reconnection and cultural safety.
• Promote awareness of the ANABIP Prevention Program and its role within the broader Wet'suwet'en Wellness framework.

4. Administration & Reporting

• Maintain accurate, confidential records and data in accordance with OW policies and privacy standards.
• Prepare monthly reports, statistical summaries, and community newsletters.
• Maintain calendars of community and reconnection events across all five communities.
• Contribute to evaluation and reporting aligned with funder and Nation requirements.

Preferred Skills:

• A diploma, degree, or a mixture of experience and post-secondary an asset
• 2 - two years of experience working youth and families.
• High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts.
• A strong understanding of native issues and community practices.
• Previous community related experience an asset.
• Excellent interpersonal and communication (written and verbal) skills.
• Good public relation skills.
• Ability to perform all duties in accordance with related legislation.
• Ability to work under minimal supervision.
