Duties and Responsibilities:

Reporting to the Manager, Research Financial Services, the Financial Analyst role is responsible for delivering research financial and budget administration services, along with providing guidance to campus units involved in research, such as the Carleton Office of Research Initiatives and Services (CORIS), Industry and Partnerships Services (IPS), Carleton International, Human Resources, Payroll, University Library, Facilities Management and Planning and Purchasing Services, Faculty and Funding Agencies to support externally and internally funded projects. This includes the active monitoring of the financial integrity of projects to minimize financial risks and maximize funding resources, as well as interpreting University and Sponsor Agency Agreements, policies, best practices, guidelines, and reporting requirements.

Furthermore, the role involves completing moderately complex analyses and reports of grant expenditures for the Principal Investigator (PI) for review and approval. The Financial Analyst prepares interim, annual, and final financial and reconciliation reports for submission to the funding agencies. The role actively monitors and reconciles research project accounts, investigates and corrects discrepancies, and prepares recommendations for management decision-making.

The Financial Analyst is required to back up other team members and perform related duties as required. Additionally, the role provides duty oversight of the Team's Financial Officers and Expense Compliance Administrators on the systems used, University and funding agencies' policies, procedures and practices.

Qualifications:

The incumbent must possess the following qualifications:

  • Sound understanding and application of funding agencies and University policies and financial controls.
  • Working knowledge of financial methodology, principles, practices, processes and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of government and non-government funding agencies.
  • Advanced knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and practices specifically to not-for-profit accounting practices.
  • Effective analytical and problem-solving skills to identify financial and non-financial issues and develop appropriate course of action.
  • High accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Effective communication skills.
  • Efficient and effective customer service focus and commitment to develop client relations.
  • Ability to work independently, set priorities and meet deadlines in an ever-changing work environment.
  • The ability to adhere to strict deadlines in a fast paced, dynamic environment.
  • Efficient time management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain strict confidentiality.
  • Proficient with using Carleton University's accounting system (Banner), and the related financial software systems (FAST Reporting, FAST Research, FAST JV, FAST BAR, FAST AR, eShop, Concur and internally developed systems).

Education and Experience:

The above is normally acquired through the completion of:

  • Four year Bachelor's degree in Commerce, preferably with a concentration in Accounting
  • CPA designation in good standing
  • Five (5) years experience working in a similar role, within a university or public sector setting
  • Two (2) years of management or supervisory experience,
  • One (1) year experience working with budget, project accounting and analysis, and financial management
  • Must have customer service and externally funded project accounting practice experience
