Reporting to the Director of Research, Policy and Library Services, the Senior Research and Policy Analyst (Analyst) provides objective policy analysis, information, support and advice to elected Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) and committees of the Legislative Assembly concerning legislative and policy initiatives; strategic planning and fiscal initiatives, including the annual consideration of departmental and public agency business plans, main estimates, capital estimates and supplementary appropriations. The Analyst monitors the government's compliance with Ministerial commitments made to MLAs and committees of the Legislative Assembly, as well as the government's follow-through on committee recommendations. The Analyst provides comprehensive support to committees during televised hearings on reports of the Auditor General of Canada and other independent officers of the Legislative Assembly. The Analyst must exercise considerable initiative and work independently in analyzing and compiling briefing notes, providing advice to primary clients, maintaining awareness of local, national and international events and developments of interest to clients.

You are a skilled researcher and excellent writer with a deep interest in Nunavut-specific public policy issues, Parliamentary affairs and Northern governance. The Analyst provides a wide scope of analysis, information and advice covering the full range of activities of the Government of Nunavut (GN) and its agencies, the activities of independent officers of the Legislative Assembly, and initiatives of other levels of government, the private sector and non-governmental entities that are of interest to clients. Primary clients are Standing and Special Committees and Regular MLAs. The Speaker and the Clerk of the Legislative Assembly are also frequent clients.

The knowledge, skills, and abilities required for this position are usually obtained through a recognized post-secondary degree in a relevant discipline (e.g. public administration, economics or related field), with at least three (3) years of related professional work experience. Strong writing skills, including the ability to prepare professional-quality reports, correspondence, briefing notes, opening comments, speaking notes, presentations, draft policies and other complex documents under very tight deadlines is required.

The Official Languages of Nunavut are Inuktut, English and French. Applicants may submit their resume in any of the official languages. Fluency in more than one of Nunavut's official languages would be considered an asset. Knowledge of Inuit communities, culture, land, Inuit Qaujimajatuqangit, Inuktut and experience working in a northern cross-cultural environment are also considered assets.
