This position is part of the Association of the Academic Staff of the University of Alberta (AASUA).

In accordance with the Trust/Research Academic Staff Agreement, this position has a comprehensive benefits package and an annual salary range of $63,465 to $71,402. This position has an end date of January 30, 2028.

Location - This is an in-person role with potential work locations at one or more of the following UofA sites: North Campus, Edmonton, South Campus, Edmonton, and Field suits in Western Canada.

Position Summary

Working under the supervision of the PI, the Research Associate will provide support with writing and executing research projects in the Cropping Systems Research Group (CSRG) led by Dr. Linda Gorim (PI). This is a field-based program with trials across Western Canada, accompanied by greenhouse/lab experiments.

The Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences is a leader in teaching, research, and community engagement across diverse fields including food systems, sustainable resource management, human ecology, and environmental sociology. With more than 500 faculty and staff, over 1,500 undergraduates, and 600 graduate students, the Faculty of Agricultural, Life & Environmental Sciences leverages 25,000 acres of research land across Alberta to deliver high-impact academic programs and applied research in partnership with industry and communities.

  • Designs individual experiments, data collection protocols and standards under the supervision of the Principal Investigator.
  • Determines most appropriate methodology to meet identified research goals.
  • Oversees/conducts data collection. Conducts advanced analysis of research data and results.
  • Summarizes, analyzes and organizes data for publication. Participates in the writing of research papers, the preparation of presentations and/or other publications. May be considered as a co-author or presenter.
  • Assists in the preparation of research grant applications and contract proposals.
  • May be responsible for the maintenance and efficient operation of the lab (e.g., specialized lab equipment maintenance and calibration).
  • May guide technical staff, students and/or post-doctoral fellows in the lab.

  • A doctoral degree (or equivalent) in agronomy, soil science, or a closely related field, with demonstrated experience conducting agronomic research.

  • Proven ability to develop and write competitive research grant proposals.
  • Exceptional scientific writing skills, supported by clear evidence of contributions to published research, proposal development, and technical or project reports.
  • Advanced statistical and data analysis skills using tools such as R, SAS, and ArcGIS (or similar platforms).
  • Ability to work flexible hours - including evenings and weekends - particularly during field seasons.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively. Candidates should be able to describe their supervisory approach and experience guiding others.
  • The Certified Crop Advisor (CCA) designation is required.
  • A valid Class 5 driver's license is required.
  • Ability to work effectively with people from a wide range of backgrounds and experiences. Candidates must provide examples of how they foster inclusion, accessibility, collaboration, and a sense of belonging within their work or research environment.
