Awake Overnight Support Worker:Casual Relief for Staff Coverage

- This position is a casual staff coverage position with shifts provided as needed in the event of staff illness or time off.
REPORTS TO: Program Director
Positions are expected to be filled in November 2025 (exact date to be confirmed). Applicants must be available for mandatory employment training in mid November.
JOB FUNCTION: Reporting to the Program Director, the Shelter Overnight Worker provides direct support to survivors of domestic violence in a safe, trauma-informed, and holistic environment. This role ensures the safety and well-being of clients during the overnight hours and is an awake position.
Kirsten's Place is in Olds, Alberta and provides temporary shelter for individuals and their children who are fleeing domestic violence. We offer support for adults, and their children, through our trauma informed case management that focuses on individualized goals, emotional support, safety planning, resource navigation and advocacy to assist our clients and their children as they build a new life free from violence.
KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES
Direct Client Support and Advocacy
- Actively engages with clients and their children throughout their stay at the shelter, role modelling healthy boundaries and relationships.
- Provide trauma-informed crisis intervention, emotional support, and conflict resolution between clients.
- Assist clients in implementing their safety plans and meeting individualized goals.
- Assist with the facilitation with an emergency placement outside of the shelter until appropriate intake and onboarding can occur.
Shelter Operations and Safety
- Maintain a secure environment by consistently enforcing shelter policies and procedures and ensuring safety protocols are followed, including reporting any hazards to the OHS Rep.
- Monitors security cameras and secure entrances to ensure safety.
- Assist in the functions of the shelter including meal preparation, shelter laundry and housekeeping duties to ensure that the shelter meets all AHS standards.
- Document interactions and incidents accurately and promptly
- Responsible to work in a manner as required by the employer, stay awake and alert during the shift, adhere to Universal Precautions and use prescribed safety equipment.
- Report any risk that cannot be eliminated to the OHS rep or Program Director.
- Other duties as identified to support the shelter.
Collaboration and Teamwork
- Contributes to a positive working environment.
- Maintains confidentiality, adheres to the Ethical Code of Conduct and monitors program operations to ensure compliance to all policies, procedures, legislation, accreditation and Health and Safety standards.
- Work closely with Caseworker and other staff to provide holistic support tailored to each client's needs.
- Communicate effectively with team, community partners, law enforcement, and other service providers as needed.
- Supports data entry for team as needed.
- Actively participates in supervision meetings and comes prepared to discuss successes and challenges using a reflective practice approach.
- Participate in team meetings, training sessions, and self-care practices to uphold a supportive work environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Understanding of trauma-informed care, crisis de-escalation techniques, and empowerment-based advocacy.
- Clear Police Intervention Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check, and Child Intervention Check
- Valid First Aid and CPR certification
- Ability to work effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Strong communication, problem-solving, and boundary-setting skills.
- Ability to work flexible shifts, including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Ability to work in a team and with minimal supervision
- Demonstrated ability to think critically, problem solve and de-escalate situations in a fast-paced environment that requires prioritization of tasks.
- The role involves working in a domestic violence crisis shelter using a trauma-informed, client-centered approach. You will witness or respond to real-life incidents and events in real-time and require emotional resilience due to frequent exposure to trauma and crisis.
